Darren Bailey got Trump’s endorsement.

May Miller said that the Roe decision is a “historic victory for white life” (her campaign said she meant to say “right to life”).

Supposedly, Irvin/Bourne’s street team is finished and they have cleared out some of their headquarters in Springfield.

Ken Griffin is leaving the state because he cannot buy influence and power so he is going to Florida to do just that.

Pritzker made a trip to New Hampshire in hopes of running for President in 2024.

Primary day is Tuesday….

The stories I have heard of poo poo Rahm used to pull is nearly unbelievable. He settled down some when he went to the House but in the 90s he was the biggest attack dog on the hill in decades. There really hasn't been anyone like him since.

CF: So tell me the dead fish story.
CS: It’s 1988. Rahm is working at the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee with the title of national campaign director. It was Rahm’s job to pick up seats, and Bush won that year. Usually when a president wins, [his party] picks up seats. Because of Rahm, really, the Democrats picked up [several seats]…. Hardly a landslide but going against the grain.

Rahm [was] very active in recruiting candidates. He traveled all around the country. One candidate he recruited was the Erie County Clerk, a young guy in his early 30s, good-looking, nice family, former teacher. This is the old Jack Kemp seat. It was a Republican-leaning district but not impossible, and the Republicans nominated a state rep named Bill Paxon. We [Sautter was working the race with Axelrod] decided to go on-air right after the primary with a strong media campaign and then go into the field, do a poll so we could get more money. Secrest does his poll, it comes back that we’ve lost ground from the earlier poll. Makes no sense. Paxon wasn’t even on the air. The campaign manager who was a Princeton grad, smart guy, who was very detailed oriented, spent hours after it came back. He instinctively thought there was something wrong and he figured out that the samples had been switched because where we lost ground was in the Democratic part, picked up in Republican part. He tells Rahm what’s going on. Rahm says, “Okay I’ll get Secrest to do another poll.” Secrest sort of digs in, very defensive, denied screwing up the poll. Finally he admits, “Yeah, okay, that’s right.”

Meanwhile we had to go off the air because we only had enough money to do one [round], and Paxon was on the air. For at least 10 days Rahm and Secrest are at a standstill. At the end, we lose. So then Rahm is comparing notes with his counterpart at the National Republican Congressional Committee, and the Republican says, “Why did you guys go off the air? Our tracking showed the race was even.” Rahm went ballistic. He and two staffers who had been involved in the race sent a dead fish in the box and signed it.

CF: So Rahm signs the card attached to the long gift box, “It’s been awful working with you. Love, Rahm.”
CS: Yeah, but the other two guys signed it, too. So Rahm was going back to Chicago and Secrest writes this really ridiculous letter…. Rahm knew that the letter was ridiculous so he sent it around to everyone. Rahm embraced it, and it became sort of a legendary story.

So I scrolled down to see the smallest town and hopped into VR to visit Rentchler IL, wondering if it was a ghost town. No, it's just farmland east of St Louis. The houses you can see in street view are a bit run down, and I immediatly had flashbacks to some rural town in Lithuania I visited on a random jump until I saw the trump 2020 flag flying. When you pull out of streetview and into satellite mode, you see that the other houses are actually a fair size and all seem to have inground swimming pools. There also seems to be way too many houses for that population of 4.

Two thoughts:

1) I was aware of Aurora getting ready to pass 200k some time ago because the Illinois Workers' Compensation Act contained a couple of carveouts (for police and fire departments) exempting them for municipalities over 200,000. This was an obvious way to single out Chicago without explicitly saying so. Sure enough, it was recently amended to 500k.

2) I haven't looked up the relevant dates, so I might be totally wrong, but I swear I remembered Newman's ethics problem coming up before the redistricting was completed, and if that recollection is correct I am convinced they did it this way in order to turf her out without having to have her get nailed in an ethics investigation in Congress. Making her compete in DuPage, which has been blue lately but in a moderate blue way rather than a left blue way, seems tailor-made to let Casten crush her so that it ends there.

Had some hope that Kina Collins could take out Danny Davis, but it’s not looking great right now. Would need a big comeback.

I’m in IL House district 15 and Michael Rabbit is not too far behind Mike Kelly, but I don’t think he’s going to pull it off, which sucks. Kelly was appointed after D’Amico retired. Kelly is an empty suit with no ideas and would be a Republican if he didn’t live in chicago. Rabbit was fairly progressive, and he’s actually doing a lot better than I thought he would, but not good enough.

Nope, the new district came out before the ethics issues came to light, and everyone was pissed that it seemed like they were turfing her out as revenge for Lipinski or being too progressive or something.

But then the poo poo came out and it was so ham-fisted and embarrassing, that I think a lot of people just kind of went, "Oh..." and shrugged.

I mean, did the Dems know when they did the district like they did? Probably. But the public had no idea.

Buglord
Well, I am disappointed my candidate (Karla Bailey-Smith) didn't win in our local House race for the 91st.

She was 100% grass-roots whereas her opponent was rolling in state party and union money, and got a Durbin endorsement. I guess 65-35 was inevitable when the party picks the candidate before the primary.

Time to start planning for end of campaign reporting I suppose.
