Best not ask Splicer's sister or the dog about this, though, because... because it's all very sad and tragic. Sprue posted:Absolutely! You wouldn't be freaked out knowing that part of your body is literally made out of scrap metal? I think it's less being upset at Yukari about it and more that it came as a result of a seriously traumatic event that left her questioning whether she's even really human, with one very obvious target who actively involved herself. More trauma than hatred.

There's also the existential dread associated with "she can't see a difference between humans and a jungle gym and is demonstrably correct "

Sprue posted:Absolutely! I literally had a nightmare about this comic last night (same operation except the mobile phone was in my shoulder). It's the nonconsensual bodily invasion (coupled with the nonchalance shown by the purple-eyed girl) as well as the idea that your body isn't yours or might be something else, like a robot. "Existential dread" Iike Tenebrais wrote is a great description. I like the comic, but I think it's super scary and gross!

Their bodies are literally simultaneously human and robot and the fact that this mechanically gifted little kid can put you back together again using spare parts from a cellphone or broken jungle gym proves it pretty solidly. Some people are going to find that more traumatic than others. Even though I think I'd personally be pretty happy to be repaired by my trans-universal girlfriend if I was bleeding to death, the experience of actually going through it might be a bit more traumatic than the idea of it alone.

It's transhumanism, and for some people that is the most terrifying, and for others it's the most liberating. The main characters are having the same dilemma we are where some are finding it freeing and amazing, and others are having nothing but fear and dread.
|
# ? Jun 30, 2022 15:38 |

Yeah it's like a version of involuntary transhumanism where your conception of what a human is wasn't really that accurate in the first place and you were always partially something else without knowing it until someone else was suddenly able to access an aspect of your existence that you never were able to.

Sprue posted:On a completely unrelated note, can anyone explain to me why the chars in qualia are so upset abt being "fixed"? I mean, robot girl saved their lives, id be down to be a bit more android Becoming part android would be following the rules. A team of specialists would take some technology that you've seen before, and connect it to your body in a familiar-looking big ol' hospital. Parts of your body weren't broken, and invisibly replaced by rusty rebar without warning. The poor kid went through a traumatic experience that they can never explain to anyone else without ending up in a psych ward. The rules have been permanently broken, and maybe they were never real at all. If she ever gets a paper cut, will her flesh split open to reveal an Akira Cronenberg mass underneath? Yukarii's repairs have lasted until now, but will they one day just... stop? The poor girl has no way to navigate her new reality. This stuff is part of why I like the comic so much; Yukarii is terrifying. She's sweet and kind and bumbling as a teen, but what will she become?

Concerned: The Half-Life and Death of Gordon Frohman 150 I have no real notes, other than it's exactly two weeks until Half-Life 2: Episode 1 is released. I've paid for and preloaded it... have you? (Also, a Hemi is apparently some sort of truck engine or something. I'm not really much of a car guy.) 151 There's a brief mention of the Combine using a teleporter to drain the Earth's ocean in Valve's book "Raising The Bar", and because I'm a dork I remember things like that. I can't remember my own cell phone number, but I remember that. 152 So, I've gotten some interesting feedback on the three Frank comics I ran last week. These comics will herein be referred to as the "Frank Tangent" for the simple reason that I enjoy referring to things herein whenever I get the chance. Anyway, in regards to the Frank Tangent, well, some people didn't think it was funny, which isn't in itself a big deal. Not everyone is going to think every comic is funny, and I get plenty of regular feedback from people telling me what they don't find funny. Which is fine! But some people seemed to think I was deliberately trying to not be funny. As in, I was trying to make serious, deep, meaningful comics. That I fully expected people to feel the weight of Frank's death, the sorrow of his children and widow and friends. The word "poignant" was thrown around a lot. Um, here's the thing, and I'll make this promise right here and now. I will never intentionally be serious, deep, meaningful, or poignant here. Ever. This ain't For Better or For Worse, for gently caress's sake. This is a jokey strip about a video game. I will never have a "point" or try to make you "think." I try to be clever, but I don't try to be real. This I so swear. So, why did people think that I was trying to be serious? Well, the humor was a lot less slapsticky and a lot more deadpan than it usually is, I guess. There weren't traditional punchlines, but I sort of thought the entire tangent was a punchline, 'cos, you know, the Combine don't have kids, or wives, or friends, or little funerals for each other. Just like they don't interview humans for positions in Citadel Purchasing or have gunships named Bruce or any of the other silly things that this comic has depicted. I mean, come on -- sad little Combine kiddies and a little gravestone by the ocean? It's just plain ridiculous. How anyone could take that seriously is completely beyond me. Anyway, I liked this little tangent a lot -- I think they're some of my favorites of the comics I've done so far. What I find interesting is that the death of a Combine soldier somehow, weirdly, resonated with certain readers, while not long ago a very pleasant young woman named Sandy was unceremoniously engulfed and regurgitated by a barnacle, and yet nary an eyelash was batted (to say nothing of the perhaps hundreds of innocent human lives lost in Ravenholm in these very pages). Bizarre.

This is one of my favourite chapters artistically, although it'll take a little set up to get to the insane embroidery panels. Actually I didn’t realise Volume 1 cold opens with a platonic, politically arranged child marriage which while historically/culturally fitting and nothing happens let’s just not, since none of the other engagements/marriages are like that I’ll just keep on posting from volume 2: embroidery boogaloo.

The art in A Bride's Story is mostly outstanding, but the insane detail of the clothes really run head first into the manga style where the faces are just empty surfaces with two giant eyes and a tiny mouth.
