Someone explained it in one of these threads, it's an agreement to get 80ish republicans in to also get 150 dems in without trouble. That's the deal, will Mitch screw Biden on this? Prior to this opening coming up I would have said no just because it was dem justices now for a ky judge later should the opportunity arise, but with the opening now, who knows?

That was the deal Democrats struck with Republicans when Trump was President.

This deal is that Mitch will stop delaying all judicial nominees for the rest of the year if Biden nominates his friend to be a Kentucky Circuit Court Judge. The red state Republican Senators still aren't going to blue slip for circuit vacancies in their state, but Mitch will let all the blue state judges get a vote without requiring 72 hours of delay between every procedural vote, which makes a nomination take at least a week per judge.

But why would the GOP ever agree to such a thing? We have a pretty long and storied history of the GOP playing Lucy with the football with Dems whose brain damage is so severe that they're still running the playbook on Bill Clinton's Third Way politics.

Biden's inner circle and Harris' inner circle reportedly get along very badly, too. We won't know the juicy details till the tell-all books start popping up in a few years, but plenty of staffers have been leaking gossip to the political press.

As the story goes, Harris' camp feel that Biden isn't giving her chances to politically shine, while the Biden camp is wary of her ambitions and feels that she's flubbed the chances she's been given. As a result, the relationship between their groups is unusually tense.

It's all anonymous sources, of course, so it could very well be false. But it's been a consistent narrative basically since Biden won the primary.

This is another case where the Senate, by simple majority, could change its own rules to reduce those delays, but won't.

Agree again about the Democrats' problem with messaging and that the GOP is much better at it. The RWM/GOP approach is the same as any other ubiquitous company or product like Coke, McDonalds, Budweiser, etc. who spend millions of dollars to remind people that they exist on every Super Bowl. Why?

It's just repetition and it's that simple. This poo poo crawls into your head whether you realize it or not, even for people who go out of their way to avoid ads. The GOP is consistently able to frame issues this way - sometimes subtly and sometimes aggressively - but the point is that they succeed this way through things like word association and simple framing. They also keep it loving simple most of the time.

The things that the democrats (ostensibly) stand for are almost all quite popular as well as being on the correct side of most issues and shouldn't require a downloadable 3 page pdf to explain. This is politics and marketing. Advertising 101. It has to fit on a bumper sticker, be catchy, repeated constantly and have a chance to soak into the conversation, which will eventually effect framing and the overall narrative. I think a lot of it has to do with the relationship between salespeople and political affiliation. I don't think I've ever met a sales rep who was a democrat; or at least a successful one. Republicans seem to have their eye on the prize, have no shame, are generally unified and disciplined in their message and seem to understand that they are SELLING SOMETHING.

This is just one of the problems with the DNC but it's a big one and I wish they'd work on it. Especially when they're right. It should even be an easier sell when it's popular, true and supported by facts but my god do they ever suck at this.

What's your source for this, exactly? The reporting today is that the deal has Biden getting two US attorneys confirmed for Kentucky in exchange, which needless to say is a horrible trade

The Democrats are great at messaging though is the thing. They just use it to condition their own base and it's worked incredibly well. Like just picking a random example that's come up recently, but "Lieberman singlehandedly crippled Obama's supermajority" was so successfully propagated as an idea that people invoke his name(in this very thread, even) to defend Obama's abandonment of FoCA despite Lieberman being ardently pro-choice and having zero conceivable reason to object to codifying what was considered settled law

Then Biden shoots it down and nothing changes. Either ends the same way basically because the current judge is relatively young for a judge and isn’t dying any time soon and probably won’t be replaced by Biden or whoever comes after by their choice.

BRAKE FOR MOOSE

I think the Democrats' problems go far deeper than messaging, but one of the big impediments to strong messaging is that Democratic voters are a huge coalition duct taped together and without all that much in common except acting as opposition to extreme social conservatism. The party can't settle on a clear message because something like economic populism is alienating to the PMC; they're nervous about going hard on social issues because they're trying to hold on to a lot of moderates; etc. It's why they function decently when they just have to yell about how much Republicans are terrible, but can't settle on anything positive themselves. Even the party representatives are also unable to come to agreement on a coherent platform - how do you sell that?

Long term, the coalition needs to die and realign, but right now they're trying to alienate the part of the coalition that has energy, which seems counterproductive to me.

Maybe. And i get some of what you're saying but still think you can boil things down to their essence and fit it on a banner or a t-shirt. At least for the most part. But I see what you mean where, with Republicans, you just have to stick a flag on it, hand someone a bible and talk about how everyone should shoot a gun and you've got 80% of the party right there. Throw in tax cuts and you're up to 90 or 95. USA USA USA is pretty basic and they've commandeered the idea and what it means to be a patriot. Or a christian for that matter.

Thing is though, left leaning policies are broadly popular and supported - even among Republicans when they are worded the right way. Even something as innocuous as "politically correct" is essentially just encouraging people to, hey, try not to be a dick to people every now and then but the GOP has framed it as censorship and an assault on free speech just because comedians should maybe try not to call people f**s or ch***s or something peppered with a lot of "how come black people are allowed to say the n word" bullshit.

I overhear it constantly from people bitching about how comedians aren't allowed to be funny anymore and "you can't say anything!" and I don't offend easily but I'm not gonna go to bat for some of Eddie Murphy or Sam Kinison's poo poo from the 80's anymore, even though I find both of those dudes funny.

I feel like Republicans have spent so much time as the opposition party, where many of their positions are just culture war topics they use to rile people up, without ever having to face the consequences of how people would react in real life if they ever actually implemented those positions.

It's like Brexit: American Culture War Edition

A national ban on Abortion, for example, has something like 7% support with the public. Republicans better hope they do lock in some kind of permanent minority, because if they follow through on implementing all the cartoon culture war nonsense they've been using to get votes, they're gonna see some serious poo poo.

The statistical realities of messing with women's healthcare and exposing millions of women to increased chances of medical issues and accidents like what happened in Ireland is going to be a real shocker. "Dog that caught the car" doesn't even begin to describe what the GOP caught hold of.

Guess were about to loving find out then. And they'll still blame all the consequences and undesirable outcomes on the weakest, the poorest and the voiceless. Which is bascially over half the country if my math is right. The GOP has convinced their voters, over decades, that the POOR people have taken all the money - again, through messaging. Uh, no, we're well past the point where it's plausible to say "Republican politicians don't really MEAN all those things they say". Literally the same day as a crazed mob of Republican voters bashed its way into the Capitol building, 138 sitting Republicans in the House, and 6 in the Senate, objected to certifying Biden's electoral votes. They have made affirming Trump's big lie as a requirement to remain a Republican in good standing. They are complicit. This is who they are, they have shown us.

"The Republicans never actually wanted to get rid of Roe and winning is going to backfire on them" is just liberal coping strategy. Saying you're going to do something and then doing it when you have the chance makes your base trust you. Running on things you don't actually want to do and then throwing up excuses when you're in position to do so demoralizes your base. Like you can just hop on Twitter right now and watch in real time as many of the staunchest historical Dem defenders slide into despair at how feeble and insincere the Democrat response is. Maybe they'll all fall back in line by November but right now next to nobody actually expects the Democrats to do anything about this even if they win

poo poo, even these boomerang theory posts seem to tacitly imply that the Democrats aren't really doing anything on their own and hope they're simply the beneficiary of backlash to Republican actions rather than actors themselves

Hopefully he does what? Not nominate the FedSoc psycho? He already made the deal, dude. This isn't something he's considering, he already agreed to it

And in what way is Pete better than Harris

Pete is a centrist cyborg but is at least "electable" and could win against the fundy fascist chuds and can also discuss things without drooling all over himself or screaming and farting like Dumb Donnie.

Meanwhile, we all wait for the "magical internet marxist to unite us all" currently serving (undercover of course) on a school board in Cleveland to finally work their way up to national politics.

..........and yeah, Bernie remains the most coherent over 80 year old around and shrugged off a heart attack in like a week. I will keep donating to him.
