I worked at a gas station in college. when I became assistant manager, it became part of my job to drive around every morning before open to get the gas prices of the other stations in town (did it also near the end of my shift too). Unless we ticked someone of in corporate (not sending in our info on time), we would always drop our price to 1 cent cheaper than the cheapest other station. The whole idea was for people to say “Murphy USA is the cheapest gas in town” and then they would buy all of our junk (soda, cigs, chips, etc) where we would make all of our money. Our worst day ever was 9/11 where we stayed at the same price all day while others went up to $8 a gallon. We were busier than ever and ended up running out of gasoline. However, since the lines were so long, no one was buying anything but the gas so they could quickly leave. It might have been the only day that we ever lost money while I worked there for 2 years. Hell, we had a day where we could not sell gas for 10 hours (worker decided to change the filter to the pump and forgot to turn off the pump) and we still made money that day because they kept selling cigs to walk ups.
