To explain, the Finnish Juhannus has such a high amount of deaths by drowning every year that people bet on the exact number. Many of those deaths occur when drunk men try to piss over the side of a boat, fall over and drown. A new phenomenon is folks passing out and drowning in those huge hot tubs everyone is installing these days.

On the other hand, faith in the EU is overall one of the lowest from all members and any real pressure from them could result into getting the very fashy nationalist in charge, which promise NATO/EU exit and closer relations with Russia in their platform. tl;dr Balkan politics as usual.

Bulgaria feels like it hardly ever figures into anything. Hungary is not only poo poo, but it's also constantly in the news because it keeps loving with things. I don't remember the last time I noticed Bulgaria trying to have a decisive say in anyhing.

The country was also simply much less urbanised back then. To give you an idea, my 60s-born dad grew up without electricity, and rode a horse until he was conscripted into the army. Now imagine what 30s were like, fresh after WWI, with our own crappy dictator on the second decade of independence. 1935 Riga ~400k city population, and no exurbs or metropolitan, whereas 2018 Riga had ~600k city population, 300k exurbs population, and 200k metropolitan population. Since the country’s population was basically identical at those points in time, you’re looking at what it looks like when ~36% of national population decide to settle in the city already housing ~21% of the population. There definitely are term limits, article 90 of their constitution spells them explicitly. https://constitution.uz/en/clause/index What happened with Karimov is that: 1) In 1995 his first term got extended through referendum until 2000, arguing that it counts as second term 2) Parliament overturned that argument, so he ran for “second” term in 2000 3) In 2002 referendum extended the term to 7 years 4) In 2007 his term expired in January, but the Parliament rules-lawyered that elections must happen in December, so another extra year there 5) Late 2007 he got nominated for the third term, argument being that the first term was under the old constitution and didn’t count 6) In 2015 he simply ran again, argument being that he has only served 1 full term since the 2002 constitution change So the current protests are about Karapalkastan’s right to be sovereign (and to secede) being stripped from the constitution. Another controversial change in the constitution is to reform the presidential term from current 5 years to the old 7 years.

they pretty much immediately walked back those changes though. extending term limits and performing a magical reset of Mirziyoyev's term count because terms under previous constitutions don't count was the far more important goal. realistically it's still Uzbekistan and the authorities aren't going to entertain any actual attempt at secession, so that can safely be ignored with the other inconvenient parts of the constitution protests have maybe died down, though probably more from heavy security presence than the amendment reversal https://twitter.com/joannalillis/status/1543585612468572160

There seems to be broad popular support in the parliament for significantly tightening gambling laws. Gambling is a major problem here, bad enough that I’m favour of the Swedish approach to have government run like 2 casinos nationwide, and have everyone just suck it. Opening proposals were: Conservatives: 30 slot machines minimum requirement, no gambling sites within 4km from residential buildings Liberals: 25 slot machines, no gambling sites in residential buildings outside the Old Riga, minimum age of 21, no gambling sites within 250 metres from schools or public squares Conservatives lost their vote 16-45, liberals won theirs 75-0. Conversation moving forward, both sides support 40 machine minimum, and: Conservatives: No gambling sites within 3km from residential buildings, no gambling between 2am and 8am, full ban on gambling halls (slot machine bars), casinos limited to 4-5 star hotels, ban from lotteries for minors and people paying child support Liberals: Allow family members to include gambling addicts (legal status here) into the national gambling prohibition register (it’s a crime to let subjects of that to gamble), ban drinking and smoking for free in gambling sites, 3h daily limit on time spent in a gambling site, ban on gambling in municipal buildings, obligation to provide gamblers with addiction treatment services information, no gambling sites within 700 metres of schools and public squares For context, the specific liberal party has a history of apparent back room deals with the gambling lobby. Notably, their regions minister did sloppily strike down Riga city development plan with highly anticipated gambling restrictions. That has since been challenged in courts, and 4 days ago our constitutional court has publicly taken the case into consideration, ordering the minister to provide the legal basis for his decision. As much as I loathe to side with our conservatives on literally anything, I think liberals are still playing softball here, with restrictions being mostly for the sake of damage control (although 40 machine requirement and the public square distance ban is going to take a lot of these poo poo holes out), to not get completely mauled over this in the election later this year. Having a bit of industry background, I can say inclusion of family members in gambling self-exclusion lists is a big deal. I left the industry proper before the big wave of regulations and subsequent compliance hit, but I'm still close enough to hear what's going on and I can't recall any other countries allowing third party exclusion.
