a podcast for cats posted:

I don't know about that. I remember from years at the dorms 20 years ago, that quite a few "alternative" looking students were rescued from harassment or muggings by bystanders. And that was a much more lawless time than 10 years ago. If anything, local boomers lament that modern men wouldn't lift a finger to defend others in need.

Dorms don’t count as a counter-example here, I would argue - people don’t feel like strangers there even if they don’t know each other all too well. I remember getting chased down the streets and almost beaten up by a crowd of like 40 people from a local dorm nearly 15 years ago, because a friend I was with looked vaguely similar to someone who had beaten up some random freshman from that dorm a few weeks before. :v:

My imaginary scenario for that was your random aggressive drunkard harassing people at a bus stop, or someone getting beaten up by a McDonalds at 3am on Friday night.

Has someone read lately about what the Azeris are doing with their newly captured territories? Are people moving there, construction projects, something like that? Back during that war I wondered if it wouldn't end up just ghost towns bc people would rather stay in Baku.

e: I'm gonna throw in here everything I find while googling.

They built an airport in Fuzuli together with the Turks: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QAqZvQuN428

Construction going on in Shusha although a bit light on details. Emiratis want to install four GW of renewable power generation? https://www.jpost.com/international/article-708683

Can't vouch for this source but allegedly all kinds of infrastructure going up: https://www.azernews.az/nation/194433.html

Probably worth keeping in mind that throwing money at flashy projects is one thing, getting people to want to live there another. Haven't found anything that would give an impression about that - population numbers etc.

Shusha, quite a bit of construction holy crap: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uPs8CmfVv0U But not exactly bustling with life seemingly.

Very topical to the current debate in Latvia, Ukraine has ratified the Istanbul Convention.

That diagram is in dire need of work. They have blanked out UK data but kept Turkey and also their "under average" spans from Greece(almost in the under 25%) to Italy(three points below the average).

The U.K. did sever its ties with the EU, unlike Turkey. I do agree though that the colour scheme configuration is awkward.

I chuckled at the Russian response to Lithuania blocking transit to Kaliningrad:
https://www.lrt.lt/en/news-in-english/19/1723423/russia-says-lithuania-s-transit-ban-illegal

quote:

On Monday, Kremlin said it would “formulate” a response after Lithuania banned the rail transit of sanctioned goods between the Russian mainland and its exclave of Kaliningrad, wedged between Poland and Lithuania on the Baltic coast.

“This decision is truly unprecedented, it is a violation of everything,” Dmitry Peskov, the Kremlin’s spokesperson, said on Monday.

Seems like the situation in Kaliningrad will become untenable after July 10th:

The ban will expand on July 10 to include cement and alcohol, according to BNS.

Are you saying russian propaganda would just go and lie to everyone like that??

Although the person she's quoting seems like a complete rando so maybe he's the one who got the wrong picture.

Anyway, yesterday I went to an Iron Maiden show that I've had a ticket for since 2019. There's no way those blue and yellow colors have been there all along, right? :)

Those look too close to a flag, and not enough like random clouds, so I'd guess this new and intentional.

huh I do wonder what the position of that war is in the Ukrainian nationalist historical memory. As with all, it seems to alternate between a vague pan-slavic thing and an anti-Russian. Sorta like how polish nationalist and russian panslavists both celebrate Grunwald.

You can find isolated, old, old believer communities.

Yeah, it’s just pre-reform Orthodox. My grandfather is one, although he does ignore the outright bigoted poo poo like not sharing kitchenware with his wife.

In Finland it goes like

code:
10 gather with friends (or not), drink excessive amounts of alcohol

20 go to a place at a beach where there is a bonfire, watch it and drink more alcohol

30 ???

40 wow I will never drink alcohol again, ever!!!

50 goto 10
