Yeah it is unclear how this thing is supposed to work out. I don’t know how light tanks are suppose to work with US doctrine since these things are going to be too heavy to airdrop, too lightly armored for a peer conflict, and too much for low intensity.

(Any relatively modern ATGM can take it out, there is no way to properly armor it considering its size/weight.)

I think airdrops are not so popular doctrinally in the USA army and you can still fit two in a globemaster. Isn't the main defense against modern ATGMs reactive armour? And moving forward stuff like the Israeli trophy?

Anyway, they are probably buying these under pressure from the medical industry which stands to lose a lot of money from these new rifles with suppressors.

4% casualties in peacetime training drops. When I was in the rehab clinic doing physio there were always airborne guys coming through with broken backs, my nurse practitioner was an airborne guy with a broken back, and so was one of the doctors.

Even trophy has its issues, but yeah fitting 2 in a globe master is the useful part for this thing. However, let’s be honest a modern battlefield is going to have plenty that can take out a relatively thin skinned tank and this thing is high profile machine.

Also, don’t worry the medical industry will still have plenty of sound related issues to make money off of because that suppressor can be taken off and probably will.

I feel like any battle space where it’s safe enough to fly this low and airdrop a humvee is safe enough to just drive it there.

But gotta waste money somehow.

A modern battlefield has plenty of poo poo that can wreck an Abrams too. Like this sucks but it's one of America's best new bits of hardware, because it is ancient.

Airplanes are a great deal faster than cars. They are also better at crossing water and terrain features.

Remember this thing is still built on the Ajax chassis, and as others have said, even a stripped-down Abrams turret is only going to add weight (not to mention ammo). It is also least air-transportable, which is certainly an improvement, but yeah, if the issues that plagued the Ajax are still there then this thing will be a non-starter (btw the British army, had already signed the contract and ordered it before they realized it was liquifying their soldiers.)

As far as air drops, I was mentioning, just compared to VDV vehicles which are usually dual-role, in particular, the 2s25 Sprut SD which has a 125 mm gun.

I mean it is the UK, but it is unclear how they went through a contest and a contract was signed considering the shape the vehicle was in.

a lot of it is little lovely warehouses that flip from cans to trailers. docks little bit of storage and one or two forklift operators. they really only deal with already palletized cargos.

the CFS do the real stuff that takes some skill (machinery in cans OTs and on FRs) and or hard loving work (like hand stacking from reefer rail car to reefer containers)

when I used to listen to the Arms Control Wonk podcast the host hammered on this point over and over and over where it didn't matter how effective your Patriot or Iron Dome or Aegis Ashore or THAAD system was on an individual missile basis: if the unit cost of a single successful interception (however many missiles it takes) is higher than the unit cost of a single missile as launched by your opponent, then the ABM system doesn't work, because the opponent simply builds more missiles
