That’s depressing. I think I’d quit making music if all I could compose was the same song over and over.

It worked for AC/DC. Sometimes, you just got one really good song, and there's plenty of ways to make that song.

Speaking of Springsteen, I listened to Apologies to the Queen Mary last night for the first time in a little while and man that album is nuts. Banger after banger. One of the best album intros with those thundering drums, and the Hungry Ghosts -> I'll Believe in Anything one-two is . Honestly it's probably one of my favorite albums ever, definitely top 50.

I do feel like this new one is a bit more varied both musically and lyrically than the last one though.

I have to say OPN’s production on is awesome. It does feel very 90s without sounding dated or copying something directly. Like it’s capturing the spirit without being a homage. Last time I had this impression was with Deerhunter’s Microcastle.

The mixing could be better though? Maybe it’s my AirPods starting to fail but it does feel a little… Compressed or mid-heavy or whatever.

Still though, c’mon Lopatin, do more indie rock.

This was how I felt with Julien Baker. Been awhile since I’ve revisited her as a result after listening nonstop for a solid few months.

There are in fact entire genres or submovements that share the same one song, two at a stretch. Looking at you, British guitar music between 20002-2008ish

To be fair, Lust For Life stole from You Can't Hurry Love.

So really, there's only ever been one song ever and it's You Can't Hurry Love.

im tired of listening to indie music. these artists, their four-single album rollouts, their songs about the hell of living in our decaying modern world, their music festivals i will never again attend because of covid and also i can't loving stand outside in the sun for six hours these days are you kidding me. instead ive spent the last few years getting really into genesis, kpop, and whichever one of like six identical 80s playlists spotify chooses to put in front of me on the start screen when i open it up.

did like that new everything everything album though it's kind of like what i like about alt-j while being significantly less embarrassing (still awful lyrics, but like, i think on purpose as a bit)

I would definitely agree that the album rollout with a ton of songs released early is not my thing. I try to just listen to the first one and wait on the actual album for the rest because I’m a thousand years old also.

It's a piece of JUNK!
I've come around to being okay with the 4 song pre-release album cycle, with the caveat that the album had better have at least 10 songs. If it's shorter, just give us 2 singles at most, thanks. Also it works best if it's not a really long release cycle. Like maybe 1 song far in advance, but the rest should be dropping within 2 months of release at most.

Basically it should be the polar opposite of what Muse is doing with their new album. The drat thing doesn't come out until August and yet they've released singles in January, March, and June. (They've also been getting progressively worse, but that's for another thread.)

I also wish more artists would release single versions that are different from the album version. I can understand why there might be hesitation to do that -- you usually arrive at your favorite mix after months of work and stick with it -- but it's a neat surprise when it happens. I feel like you can and should do things differently on an album than on the singles.

Listening to the new Metric and it's fine, but it's no Old World Underground, Live It Out or Fantasies. I'd rather just listen to their older stuff. Give me Hustle Rose or Combat Baby or Empty or Monster Hospital or Gold Guns Girls over Doomscroller any day. They just have so many better songs in their back catalog.
