This is the reason they are abandoning him - because all that matters to the Tories is power, and his reputation is now trashed so much it is hurting their own career and reelection prospects - stabbing him in the back might save them/boost their own leadership chances. TL/DR: Tories are inhuman selfish monsters and at no point should ever be given any credit or benefit of the doubt.
