I guess I had a major score today, but it was mostly in finding a pretty nice stereo. But my understanding is that goons love Rumors more than any album under the sun, so take a gander at this baby. It's like NM: And this album encapsulates the 70s to me better than any other record, although it's partly because I had a crush on Ann when I was about 14: Never really cared for Journey much myself, but it's quintissentially 80s.

Ayyyyy shout out to my dudes over at Ranch Records in Bend, who threw a Parental Advisory poster in their window as a way to play whatever the hell they want in the store, which is pretty hilarious. Managed to snag The Roches' self-titled and Garbage's Version 2.0.

It hasn't occurred to me that anyone is bringing kids in them or that they'd restrict what kind of music they're playing. I suppose that has a lot to do with the "vinyl revival" and I'm sure more than one Karen yelling about their kid hearing a swear word for the three seconds they weren't watching porn or Nazi videos on their phone. petit choux posted:And here's a few more quintessentially 80s records from today: I say this as someone who loves David Bowie. It blows my mind that this was his follow up to Scary Monsters (which is the last of his 80s albums you should hear and one of his best overall). Bowie himself didn't like Let's Dance and years later when he was asked about that period of his career he said (paraphrasing a bit) "My shows were full of Phil Collins fans when what I wanted were Iggy Pop fans.". Cat People is the great track from that album and even then the non-album version released as a single from the movie Cat People is the superior version of the song. I've listened to the entire Let's Dance album all the way through one single time.

Thanks. edit: To be clear I didn't have a problem with the record getting here intact. The problem was the seller called it a VG+ when it very clearly wasn't. Even with the most cursory visual grade you can tell. Though I will say that for some reason European sellers have a tendency to use these thin mailers that are barely better than just putting the disc in a cardstock envelope and those do make me nervous. However I've only had a problem once with something from overseas getting smushed and it was years ago and the warp it made in the record was very minor and didn't effect the playback. My Spincare record cleaner has arrived, just need to get some de-ionised water. I ordered some of their inner sleeves as well, but the second Amazon driver decided to deliver them somewhere else, so I put an order in directly with Spincare. It seems silly to clean a bunch of records and put them back in their old, paper inner sleeves, so I'll wait until I've got everything. I am very excited.

I've listened to the entire Let's Dance album all the way through one single time. Let's Dance has a bunch of great songs. The opening three songs is a great run - Modern Love, China Girl, and Let's Dance - these are career defining songs for Bowie that he kept bringing out in his shows until the end of his touring career. As far as his opinions on the album - he didn't hate this album. He did what he set out to do with this album. It's just that because it was such a big hit, EMI wanted more hits, and that led to Tonight, which Bowie wasn't really that involved in based on accounts. He also was never quite satisfied with Never Let Me Down Again, but honestly, I think he's too harsh on that album. Bowie was deeply involved in Let's Dance and it was an independent production. He had set out with the intention of making a big hit record, one for the masses. It's just that what came after wasn't what he wanted to do and was more of him trying to appease people.

I have about 4 turntables that are as good or better so it's not crucial but I'd rather it work as a complete unit. I think there's something weird about that, it spun once the first time I powered it up and now it's dead. Also, the disc changer opened once, I took out all the old CDs, closed it and now it won't open at all. Everything else I've tried has worked and the speakers are pretty good. Thanks for the kind advice, the only response I got in the vintage stereo thread was scorn for bringing such a lowbrow offering.

The belts go on those after 30 years. Easy to replace if you are comfortable taking things apart. The fact that they worked once means they didn't melt into black goo too so that's a win.

I'm probably going to keep it for my basement, I can't see getting much for it. But you lot have talked me into selling that Ion anyway. It's in great shape, should make somebody very happy. I have not played it very loud, but I can't understand the low opinion of the speakers. They seem like the best thing about this stereo, at least visually. Are the speaker elements themselves just low quality or is it the enclosure, or what? Any substantial reasoning?

Those will sound better than a lot of bookshelves just because they move more air and have bass, but they’re going to have low grade components and if you open them up they wont be braced or insulated well (if at all). I imagine they’re fairly light for their size, right?

My kid has come to the record store with me twice. He mostly just wants to listen to stupid rear end YouTube songs about being scared now but there was a time when I could get him to put on daft punk alive 2007, or as he called it “mountain music” His albums are that, cut copy, wavves because it has a cat on it, and big fish theory.
