I don't want to dismiss the point outright but great grandma wasn't running around in a 90s Psylocke-esque leotard. Like Zoe did, actually.

No, because this version of Kamala has very little narrative about body image problems and the show generally shows an average person as not having to be constantly insecure about it until told it’s okay.

I think it's more the fact she had focus and was given time to show her character, than anything she did in particular really. It's like the first few minutes of Up!; nothing it did was spectacular or particularly deep or anything, but it just did it real well, and that was enough to get people emotional. This isn't as well done by any means, but it's not as emotionally devastating either. I'm pretty sure the people praising it are mostly praising the fact it was allowed the time to tell the story it wanted, rather than the depths of the characters or anything.

I'd say the great-grandfather was more interesting if anything too, since he went from a rather pacifistic uniter to angry at people who weren't helping support everyone, and who he felt were abandoning him and his family. We didn't get a huge focus on that transition, which happens off screen really, but it's an interesting change that is easily understandable given the circumstances, so it's effective regardless.

Yeah he was a neat character, and to be clear I do want to say that on its own it did make a good story and I'm glad it was told. Even on a personal level; I knew poo poo about the partition so I'm glad for the education. I probably would be a thousand times less salty if this was a 10 episode or even 8 episode series.

I'm not talking about Iman Vellani. I was talking about the actress for Aisha, as well as the people talking about how Kamala's powers needed to be changed from the comics so that they could be more comfortable with her appearance. Internalizing the idea that women are obligated to change their bodies to make society more comfortable is one of the things that really drives body image issues, and I don't think this show or it's audience quite crosses that line... but sometimes it skims up against it.

It's just an issue I have a hair-trigger on, because it happens so often. VFX and the way female superheroine's powers are portrayed in film are not an apolitical topic: She-Hulk VFX Team Was Reportedly Told To Make Her "Smaller"

Aisha looks like her actress with basic makeup appropriate for Indian culture. This version of Kamala is not insecure enough about her body that she’s wildly changing size and stretching.

The last superhero show with a non evil character who are hard to look at was Umbrella Academy S3 and that was probably 10th on the call sheet.

It’s fine to have attractive people on television as long as being attractive isn’t their only character trait. It would be cool if relationships of mixed beauty happened without it being a huge, “he’s out of my league” plotline. I think the show does a decent job of that.

Decent episode of Ms. Marvel, agree that the final episode is going to have to cram a lot in.

I don't think Kamran is going to be the villain, I think he more than likely sacrifices himself to save Kamala.

On reflection, about this solid 3/5 movie that I like, I'm not sure how I feel about Asgard being turned into a tourist attraction for laughs. A mighty race of space vikings, who suffered at the hands of Thanos pre-Snap so their 50% deaths are never returning, who died fighting Hela before that, and Thanos again at the final Avengers compound battle, mighty beings that literal gods lived among... and now they're a discount Disneyland doing cheap stage plays of all their pain so they can sell "Infinity Cones" ice-cream and get money from tourists.

This is like an Indian reservation casino, a broken people forced to do something gross to survive, and it's played for laughs. For how much we lauded Ragnarok and Taika for broadening the diversity and inclusivity, it seems particularly tone deaf for Asgard to be reduced to... well, this. They could be selling their skills, their technology, their experience, but nope they're broken and poor and pathetic and isn't that something to laugh at?

It's humiliating, frankly. And the more I think about it, the more it bothers me.

On the Asgardians. After getting murdered by Hela, Odin is gone, Heimdall is gone, the Valkyries are gone, Asgard is gone. They have Thor as the only really powerful Asgardian left and he's never around. It appeared to me even back at the end of Ragnarok when they were fleeing Asgard on that spaceship, they had essentially become a population of refugees. They're on earth now as a shadow of what they formally were. I was surprised they somehow managed to get those floating ships again. I didn't think the way they were presented was out of place. And playing it for laughs was ok in my opinion, probably better than making a super serious statement about how pathetic they've become. I'm not sure if Taika Waititi knows how to do that anyway. But I loved this movie, thought it was great, and hope he does another.

T:L&T— They are space Vikings, so their attitude towards death is different than most people. The people who died fighting Thanos and Hela are in Valhalla which is like the best possible outcome for a space Viking.

May be the minority opinion here but can Thor talk go in the Thor thread in CD? The TV thread always turns into a minefield of spoiler bars when a movie comes out which makes it a pain to read and follow

If its just me then I'll just stfu and go away till I've watched Thor but just putting the idea out there because it also makes it easier to go back and read peoples thoughts about it when you do get round to seeing it

I've said this before in the Star Wars TV thread and it's a little lovely but most of the time the TV shows and Movies are so intwined that keeping TV and movie discussions in their separate threads is kind of hard. Granted Star Wars movies aren't really popping out right now but I personally don't follow the movie threads just because the series come out more frequently and it's one less thread I need to follow/discuss. Also after the movie's been out for a while the movie thread just sorta dies off whereas this thread won't be going anywhere soon since it'll cover all shows and future shows so yeah. I haven't seen the movie either and it's a bunch of spoiler bars for me as well but I think it's just something we can live it.

However, if it's just me then I'll just stfu.

I agree. Unless its something that directly impacts a current or recent show, then it makes sense. Otherwise, whats the point of the movie having its own thread? Maybe there should be a generic MCU spoiler thread. Is that a thing I just dont know about?

As you said, there aren't any Star Wars movies coming out. If a movie came out while a TV show was airing, I think it would be courteous to keep the spoiler discussions for each in separate threads.

But that's just my inclination. Consider it another vote for segregating discussion, if that's on the table, but I can live with it either way.

I think it'll be mostly ok as long as posters are good about labeling spoilers. There's not a ton going on that needs spoiling for Ms. Marvel atm, and by the time the next episode is out the Thor chat will probably have died down somewhat.
