one of the most surprising things about america to me was just how these people are out and about in the real world doing normal things and not like hiding in fortresses with private chefs

how expensive is that restaurant? is it like vip only or what's going on?

It's an expensive steakhouse chain where you buy a steak for $60+. It's not extremely fancy, you can wear jeans there

There's a popular restaurant in Austin called "The Oasis" (DO NOT GO THERE) that's built on the side of a cliff over a lake, and the food loving sucks and it's crazy expensive with no pretense of being fancy food, people go to look at the lake at sunset and they literally clap when the sunset is pretty.

I hate that place except for the fact that it extracts money from chuds. Oh also it is in the weirdest building complex imaginable, peppered with hideous sculptures.

There's a brewery there and it's not insane except the whole place is an idiot magnet so the brewery is only worth visiting during the day.

I like to think that there’s a corollary where there is often an inverse relationship between the ramshackle nature of a place and its food being wildly delicious.

for example one of the best Korean BBQ taco places near me is in a space deep in an industrial park, sandwiched between warehouses. there’s also an amazing brewery near me that is right next to a mining facility. one of the best authentic mexican places I know of is a standing room only shack with tarp wrapped and propped over poles stuck into concrete in plastic barrels to make “weather-proofing” and it cannot be overstated how good the food is. my absolute favorite wing spot is in a space that is overall the same weathered yellow color as an old PC. Inside and out.

this isn’t always true, though, something else is missing. because plenty of lovely restaurants exist in lovely enclosures but it’s like once you experience one of those places above you gain a sense about it and can just tell when you see it.

so I guess like the Supreme Court ruling on pornography: I can’t tell you the definition but I know it when I see it.

The two local malls closest to my home look exactly like those. One has a boxing gym now that's always empty. The other has a VR gaming place thats always empty.

Both have third-party Lego reseller stores and the prices for everything are obscenely expensive, even for used sets

Morton is an upscale steak house for pretentious trash like beer chudge. It’s expensive chain dining for people who don’t know better and think they’re too good for Olive Garden but are too basic for Michelin star restaurants.

I would not pay for Morton’s, el gaucho, Ruth’s Chris, Daniel’s Broiler etc. because the steaks, sides etc are all severely overpriced and not anything special. If you want to spend that money, go somewhere for better food and experience like a local upscale restaurant or find a Michelin star place.

quote:

California is set to make its own brand of insulin — a lifesaving drug for the millions of Americans living with diabetes -- according to an announcement Gov. Gavin Newsom made Thursday on Twitter. It'll be the first state to do so.

The state will contract its own brand to produce insulin at a price "close to at-cost," Newsom said. A budget Newsom just signed includes $50 million for developing low-cost insulin and another $50 million for a California-based insulin manufacturing facility, he said.

"Many Americans experience out-of-pocket costs anywhere from $300 to $500 per month for this life-saving drug," Newsom said. "California is now taking matters into our own hands."

Newsom has had plans to start California on the path toward making its own prescription drugs since he took office. The Los Angeles Times reported in June that the state's generic drug label, CalRx, could begin producing insulin within the next few years. Additionally, the state may target other drugs that are either expensive or in short supply, according to the report.

About loving time. And I'm looking forward to CHUD states banning California insulin imports. It just boggles my mind that any state could have started to manufacture drugs at anytime to supplement their budget, but nobody has.

Because my work was in a call center attached to it I would walk around in the mall on my breaks and they would still put up all the Christmas decorations including full animatronic bear orchestra, except there was like 10 people in the mall. Spooky stuff.
