I've made a huge mistake.
I don't think all the photos are the same site. The ones I think are Cardington aren't the same as the ones with the wind breaks.

Cardington has the triangular roof but with a raised spine. The design of the door match too.

The site with the wind breaks; one has a gambrel roof, the other a triangular roof without a raised spine.

There's a third style, with a roof of four ridges.

An Easyjet flight heading from London to the Spanish holiday island of Menorca on Sunday was escorted to its destination by a Spanish fighter jet after a British teenager onboard made a bomb threat on social media, police said on Monday.

The 18-year-old, who was travelling with five friends, spent the night in jail and is awaiting a court hearing, said a spokesman for Spain's Civil Guard police.

Stupid question, but what good does the intercept do? Assuming the threat was a means to hijack, are they just there for a shoot down if things go sideways? Or is there more to it?

It could get that far. I think the main thing is that the interceptors can see immediately what the aircraft is doing and let ATC or their military control respond accordingly. Procedures are standardized by the ICAO, here’s an FAA document: https://www.faa.gov/news/safety_briefing/2015/media/intercept-procedures.pdf

yeah it didn't look to me like that FA/18 had any A2A hung, it's an observational thing.... also, it was a bomb threat not a hijacking so the response may change based on the threat.

As I recall one of the “fun” things that happened on 9/11 was that fighter(s) were able to be scrambled and were en route to flight 93 but were completely unarmed (ie no gun). So the pilot now aware of the other 3 flights were left wondering if an F-16 can destroy a 757 by ramming.

When that Horizon Q400 got stolen in Seattle in 2018, the Air Force scrambled a couple of F-15's out of Portland, and since that particular unit is dedicated to air defense, the airplanes were carrying live AMRAAM's and Sidewinders, but the stolen Q never met whatever criteria they had for firing on it.

One of the interesting side notes from that was that there was also a KC-135 that was supposed to scramble from Fairchild (near Spokane) to support the F-15's, but it ran into mechanical issues, so there was a discussion about using a pair of KC-46's doing test flights in the area to refuel the fighters if need be, but they ended up getting a backup tanker launched from Fairchild in enough time.

IIRC it was less a discussion and more the KC-46 crew saying “uhhhh, we’re already here and we’ve got gas” and getting told no.

That entire situation was just loving bizarre, and I was amazed how fast it left the news cycle, probably because it accidentally hit a pretty good "Friday night news dump" time slot.

I live in Seattle and saw him flying around. It was pretty obvious that something was out of the ordinary just because he was nowhere near the usual pattern, but I didn't see much, just caught sight of him a couple of times flying in a weird way at a weird altitude. I didn't have any context, and I was out walking, so I didn't find out the tragic story until hours later. Poor guy.

What surprised me is how little my friend in Seattle knew about it. I originally broke the news of the ground stop at Sea-Tac to him, and found out about the stolen plane before his local news broke the story, and I'm on the other side of the country.

Maybe they were trying to minimize Karen panic?

That’s part of it, another thing is that at the end of the day it’s a suicide and usually news does try to not glorify that.

I do find the reaction from the wider internet of sympathy and glorifying what he did interesting. This Reddit thread on one of the tribute videos has a good variety of reactions: https://www.reddit.com/r/videos/comments/96zlfv/rip_sky_king/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf

CW: suicide However this Reddit post is exactly why the wider media probably didn’t make a big deal out of it: https://www.reddit.com/r/depression...utm_name=iossmf

quote:

On January 21, 2021, the Blue Angels conducted a sneak pass practice run over a particular set of buildings and personnel on the base. The pilot veered slightly off his intended course resulting in the pilot being within just 100 feet of the buildings. Witness statements say the resulting fly-by ripped tiles and roofing from nearby buildings and was strong enough to dislodge walls that were supposed to withstand earthquakes. People nearby suffered ringing ears and headaches. So what went wrong?

Simply put, the plane was too low, too drat fast, and too powerful. See, the Blue Angels hadn’t used that exact plane before. Starting last year, the squadron switched to F/A18 Super Hornets from regular F/A 18 Hornets. An investigative analysis done after the incident by the Naval Air Warfare Center Aircraft Division found that the Super Hornet created a larger sonic airflow than the previous Hornet. This sonic airflow can create a shockwave that can reach the ground and damage buildings or people. The investigation also found pilot error.

The pilot was supposed to follow a path that would put the plane within 500 feet of the crowd line at a speed of almost 725 mph. Instead, the pilot was 82 feet inside the crowd line going nearly 20 mph faster. This only caused the sonic airflow to increase, which caused more damage. The pilot didn’t even learn of the damage until after he landed, calling the pass “unremarkable” from inside the cockpit.

Yeah the problem wasn't "more powerful" it was that the pilot went 745mph instead of 725mph.

I admit I'm no structural engineer, but it seems to me that a pressure wave from the sky and a seismic wave from the ground are completely different scenarios, and something built to withstand one wouldn't necessarily withstand the other.

If i remember my studies correctly, earthquakes are a sine moving on one or two axis while a shockwave is a single inpulse. An earthquake resistant wall need to withstand a long time of stress while a shockwave is an instantaneous event.
