I don't think all the photos are the same site. The ones I think are Cardington aren't the same as the ones with the wind breaks. Cardington has the triangular roof but with a raised spine. The design of the door match too. The site with the wind breaks; one has a gambrel roof, the other a triangular roof without a raised spine. There's a third style, with a roof of four ridges.

I think the main thing is that the interceptors can see immediately what the aircraft is doing and let ATC or their military control respond accordingly. Procedures are standardized by the ICAO, here’s an FAA document: https://www.faa.gov/news/safety_briefing/2015/media/intercept-procedures.pdf

When that Horizon Q400 got stolen in Seattle in 2018, the Air Force scrambled a couple of F-15's out of Portland, and since that particular unit is dedicated to air defense, the airplanes were carrying live AMRAAM's and Sidewinders, but the stolen Q never met whatever criteria they had for firing on it. One of the interesting side notes from that was that there was also a KC-135 that was supposed to scramble from Fairchild (near Spokane) to support the F-15's, but it ran into mechanical issues, so there was a discussion about using a pair of KC-46's doing test flights in the area to refuel the fighters if need be, but they ended up getting a backup tanker launched from Fairchild in enough time.

IIRC it was less a discussion and more the KC-46 crew saying “uhhhh, we’re already here and we’ve got gas” and getting told no.

My favorite - for lack of a better word - fact about that incident was the F-15 pilots sounding impressed at the guy doing barrel rolls in a Q400.

That entire situation was just loving bizarre, and I was amazed how fast it left the news cycle, probably because it accidentally hit a pretty good "Friday night news dump" time slot.

I live in Seattle and saw him flying around. It was pretty obvious that something was out of the ordinary just because he was nowhere near the usual pattern, but I didn't see much, just caught sight of him a couple of times flying in a weird way at a weird altitude. I didn't have any context, and I was out walking, so I didn't find out the tragic story until hours later. Poor guy.

What surprised me is how little my friend in Seattle knew about it. I originally broke the news of the ground stop at Sea-Tac to him, and found out about the stolen plane before his local news broke the story, and I'm on the other side of the country. Maybe they were trying to minimize Karen panic?

That’s part of it, another thing is that at the end of the day it’s a suicide and usually news does try to not glorify that. I do find the reaction from the wider internet of sympathy and glorifying what he did interesting. This Reddit thread on one of the tribute videos has a good variety of reactions: https://www.reddit.com/r/videos/comments/96zlfv/rip_sky_king/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf CW: suicide However this Reddit post is exactly why the wider media probably didn’t make a big deal out of it: https://www.reddit.com/r/depression...utm_name=iossmf

Yeah the problem wasn't "more powerful" it was that the pilot went 745mph instead of 725mph. Which caused this to happen:

If i remember my studies correctly, earthquakes are a sine moving on one or two axis while a shockwave is a single inpulse. An earthquake resistant wall need to withstand a long time of stress while a shockwave is an instantaneous event.
