Shorts and puts work in regulated, transparent, audited marketplaces because there are rules and people who don't follow them face consequences. Crypto hates all that, so shorts, puts, and leveraged positions get wiped out regularly due to anomalous jumps in price at critical times. It's weird how often it happens! That's just how it goes sometimes.

Also sometimes they just don't let you sell. Or run off with all your play money.

Tricky Ed posted:Shorts and puts work in regulated, transparent, audited marketplaces because there are rules and people who don't follow them face consequences. His argument was that because crypto is open and "everything is on the blockchain" it means transactions can't be hidden and therefore he can see everything. Even if you just accepted that at face value to your average person the stuff is essentially anonymised anyway, so you have no visibility of wash trades between wallets, whales manipulating markets, or even the exchanges themselves manipulating them with their own customer's funds, as forms the basis of that Voyager lawsuit. It should not come as any great surprise to anyone with a brain that having no regulation when it comes to money is not some "power to the people" utopia, it's the opposite.

Durzel posted:I remember a friend who moved from stocks & shares into crypto because he felt that the former was "controlled" by shadow players with dark markets and what-have-you, in much the same way as GME mentalists talk about their omnipotent enemy hedge funds "doing illegal things" to stop them flying to the mooooooon. I feel like the major thing you have to tell anyone who thinks the ledger is public and therefore fraud/manipulation isn't possible is that the Exchanges, which for most people are the only entrance to the market are not public ledgers and are where most crypto activity takes place. Bitcoin is so useless as a currency or security that all these people and companies had to graft an entire ecosystem of services and products on to it in order to make it usable to the average person. Even then, it's a million times easier to just keep having a normal debit card and to buy stocks and bonds in the regular market instead of getting into crypto.
