Democratically elected politicians represent us. That's literally the definition of their job, that's why the exist. People we cannot relate to, and who do not attempt to relate to us, will suffer at the ballot box. And, here's the great thing: you can totally fake it! Look at GWB and Trump and BoJo! They're rich assholes who don't give a gently caress about you, and have no idea what your life is like, and they'd kill themselves if they had to switch places with you, but they learned to fake it. It's not debate club, you can't win just by having the best argument. You should, as a general principle, do right by the people you represent and by society as a whole, but that's not sufficient to guarantee electoral victory.

Trump didn't really fake anything. He still was an gold-toilet billionaire who never got his hands dirty.

It turns out, the only part you need with many people is "say the racist poo poo that we think to ourselves".

Right now we have Republican governors in MD, MA, NH, and VT

On the other side of it we somehow have Democrats in KS, KY, and LA.

Kansas I can explain since I'm in the area, the GOP just wrecked the state SO AMAZINGLY BADLY that the people voted for a Democrat out of sheer desperation to finally end the stupid "cut all the taxes for job growth" experiment to get the government funded. She'll probably get tossed right back out this November.

IMHO, having been born, raised, and lived 2/3 of my life in the NE, I think this is close, but it's not so much 'balance' is something akin to blue-collar gumption.

There is something like a union sentiment that still exists in the NE and it doesn't fit neatly into the political spectrum. You get some people who are of the 'socially progressive, fiscally conservative' opinion, you get genuine socialists, you get unionists with nasty racists streaks, and a whole bunch of other stuff. It's a weird pot that could really be pushed in either direction and I think a lot of people in MA, in particular, take it for granted that they live in a blue stronghold and don't really examine why or what that means, and it makes it potentially vulnerable to a particular flavor of populist that thankfully has not yet arisen but easily could.

Christie got elected because he ran against Jon Corzine in 09 who had passed several tax hikes in 07 and then had the economy crumble in 09. Even then it was pretty close. For perspective, the 2021 election with a media narrative of "Dems barely hold on to NJ with Republicans striking back" when Murphy won by 3.2%, and Christie beat Corzine by 3.6% in 09.

He won re-election in 13 because of his photo-ops with Obama after Sandy, where even my vote blue no matter who parents said "I'm not voting for him but he did a good job after Sandy." It then came out a year later that the Sandy rebuild fund was a huge clusterfuck with rampant corruption and Bridgegate and everything else hit the fan with him.

On what do you base the idea that Pete is a more viable candidate in the general than Newsom? He's never won anything bigger than a small town mayorship and his points of appeal don't appear to translate outside of a few specific subsets of the Democrat primary electorate, and his current job is one of the public faces of a disaster of presidential administration. Also, as Obama himself pointed out, Pete is short. The official claim is 5'9, which as observed with Ben Shapiro and Marco Rubio, is a height point claimed by people shorter than 5'9 who can't pass as average height but don't want to admit they're that far below it. That's the same claimed height as Ron DeSantis, and IMO a big reason I wouldn't expect him to survive a primary fight against Trump. Aesthetics are a huge part of general election appeal and Pete gets absolutely washed in that department by someone like Newsom

You forgot to mention he's gay which is going to turn off a lot of voters in the "moderate" right and left.

Newsom is exactly the kind of snake who would throw anyone under the bus he thinks will put him personally ahead. I had the displeasure of hearing him give a speech once, and every base instinct I had was telling me he was waiting for me to fall asleep so he could slit my throat and eat my young. I don't believe for a second he'd support the establishment one more inch than it personally benefits him, and he's smart enough to go for an opening if he sees it

It's not that I think it's the most likely scenario, but I don't see any other way of Biden not being renominated than someone thinking they can ride that particular kind of frustration, and Newsom has clearly been testing the waters

To me, Newsom always gives me sleazy car salesman vibes. Part of my concern with him is that his entire career has essentially been him trying to angle his way into the Presidency. He's a generally standard corporate Dem on most issues, but he's smart enough to know that when something as titanic as Roe being overturned happens, it's good politics to at least pretend you are doing something.

Sadly, I think he would still be a better President than Biden would, but that's really not saying much at this point. The main thing he has going in his favor is that CA is doing well right now. Most of that has little to do with him. He has also been responsible for killing some progressive initiatives in CA like the high speed rail project.

Newsom probably has the best shot, because he's not tainted with the stink of the Biden administration. Kamala and Pete would be in real trouble. Neither have any achievements of their own and both are tied to the least popular president since the last one.

Really a lot of this is going to come down to how much latitude SCOTUS gives states to write election law, and how many states are in Republican control after the midterms. If Wisconsin brings back literacy tests or something, that changes the calculations.

Hawaii, New Jersey, or Washington state are probably the most left-wing current state governments that aren't California; depending on what issues you prioritize.

And once again you coastal fucks completely forget about Illinois, which has had a supermajority blue state assembly since 2012 (with a slight blip) and been under Democratic control since 2002 and reliably voted Democratic for president since Clinton. The Big Three Dem strongholds are considered California, New York, and Illinois.
