I guess I misused the word. It is handcrafted with love! I meant joyless in terms of what it provokes in the audience, the emotional weight where it's depressing and feels pointless, how the landscapes are beautiful in the sense of being appropriate for giant prints on the walls of a cafe rather than a place that feels worth visiting. The emotional rhythm of the gameplay is this technique of forcing frustration followed by relief, the same way a comedy routine does, but comedy provides joy when you laugh. when you overcome your obstacles, HK gives you charms that are as exciting as a piece of armor in Grim Dawn. The character progression and how it opens up increasingly wild traversal in Ori 2 makes me feel delight! The emotions I feel playing these two games contrast pretty strongly.

Some reason for me, movement in HK never clicked, despite being a fan of metroidvania platformers. The jumps always felt odd and the sword always too short for the range of movement options. Not saying it's bad though, it's a wonderfully conceived world with a great art direction, but something about how the game handles always felt weird to me and I've never been able to put words to what exactly is the cause.

While I initially enjoy Hollow Knight, it’s way too drat long and I always get bored and have never gotten anywhere near the end. I never got bored with either Ori game and even completed them both, which is a very rare thing these days.

I had a good time with it. Both it and RF4 are on steam and they're pretty similiar in alot of ways.

I think your average person might get turned off by the sorta janky combat. It's really not very polished at all. For me that wasn't enough of a detractor to stop.

What eventually killed my interest is when I was in the post game and going for 100% completion. I had already done alot and I was working on gathering some of the rare resources to make all these high tier, end game weapons/armor when I realized some of them are like .01% drops and I'd need half a dozen of them to make everything. Just a loving ton of the late game items require insane amount of monster farming for rare drops to make and it was too much for me.

Up until that point I thought it was p good. Maybe try RF4 first if it's cheaper, it's most of the same game.

at least with retro shooters, the latter is almost always the case. dread templar, HROT, wrath, viscerafest, they're all using early access to get feedback on episode 1 and hammer out the rest of the content over that time (all of those games except wrath have finished 2/3rds of their episodes at this point with an eye on launching later this year)

I've been trying to get off the achievement treadmill, but that latent OCD just keeps on truckin'. It's not so bad for games with a lot of achievements, but once you cross a certain threshold where you're "Almost" done, those last few become compulsive.

It's especially annoying when the game is mostly easy with a single achievement that's absurdly difficult. Looking at you, Stardew Valley.

Worth noting that the item that increases drop rates, rare can, is like a sub 1% fishing catch rate. So even going this route is going to involve quite alot of farming.

It's a tough game to go for completion in, is all.

The main problem with not going completionist in RF5 is that the main plot/events/dungeons dry up pretty fast. I was like, halfway through the first year and ran out of stuff to do besides grind friendship and such. I think having it on PC would have solved most of my issues with the game though, esp since you can just cheat after you get to the grinding only stage.

I watched him for a bit when he was trying to get his first rare can and this can also be mitigated. There's some specific pond where the fishing rate for it is significantly higher.

I don't think anyone should bother 100%ing rpgs though, my roommate just happens to really get a lot of satisfaction out of this poo poo and I don't understand it.

How is the Klonoa port?

It's fine. It does a good enough job of recreating the gameplay of the original but I felt the new graphics took away a lot of the charm. Cutscenes in particular were very stylized and expressive in the PS1 version, in the new one everything is rendered in the same engine as the gameplay and just feels kind of flat and uninspired. The scene of the Moon Kingdom rising out of the ground in particular was a standout moment in the original and the remake doesn't do it justice at all. You go from this:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ge7ZKcuQ1fg

to this:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pvkvLQb_xIE&t=9115s

Not to say that it's bad, but I think I'm always going to load up an emulator and play the original every time.

Haven't played the second game yet, I might like it more since I never played it on the PS2 enough to have any real nostalgia or point of comparison.

I'm not entirely sure what I should ask for game codes, half steam store price? less? I don't want to ask for too much, but also want to be able to get an appreciable amount to help cover mom's expenses, since the FIRST bill she's received so far right after getting out of the hospital was for $1700, so I think she's going to need quite a bit.

On my sales, I usually do a flat 75%ish off whatever the full list price is on Steam but that's based off me personally never buying anything unless it's 75% off so I might be an outlier.
