Yeah, I was getting White Dwarf when Mordheim was getting previewed and then released and boy was it exciting . Those plastic Empire henchmen offered opportunities for weird, characterful models on a level we hadn't seen before.

I'm fairly sure GW store workers were told to tell people to bugger off if they had painted their Cawdor/Redemptionists white and looking like the KKK. There was also an old Dark Eldar figure that could be painted as though she was wearing nothing but a string bikini - when it was actually a bodysuit with 'piping' over it - and that was one they were told to look out for to tell people to knock it off.

There may have been more model/paint combos they were told to not allow people to play with at stores, but I haven't been told them.

(Seriously, classic Mordheim minis tend to sell for even more than the - much older yet generally much better - classic Necromunda minis)

honestly the only mordheim miniatures i don't love are the skaven (which i dumbly bought a box of before i knew it was still in production and you can get twice the models on the exact same sprue for half the price).

the witch hunters are amazing. mordheim came out in a period when things were getting grimdark but hadn't gotten overly complicated in the sculpts. you can paint them dark and spooky and they will still read what they are (unlike any contemporary gw miniature).

i generally kind of hate the 90s ultra gritty stuff but the mordheim book still works for me in a halloween type vibe (aside from ulli & marquand (terrible))

Honestly, this one is GW’s fault. They knew what they were doing. If you look at the bare metal model she LOOKS nearly naked, and I saw way more people who painted her that way than who gave her the bodysuit.

Fwiw, this is the figure:

It's unclear if that was ever intended to actually be a bodysuit. And I'm still looking for that dumb figure for my Blood Bowl team.

Educate. Agitate. Liberate.
The line on the sleeve makes me think it was always supposed to be a body suit (because a strap would contour that way), but they had to know people were going to paint it like a string bikini. They put the lines right over the nipples!

The plastic Skaven engineer's warplock pistol just looks like normal one-handed blunderbuss with a scope on it. You could probably get away with that and just painting it as beat up and rusted. You could even have some wires or something exposed to push it further.

(someone's model I just found off a GIS)

40k skitarii pistols. They all look gloriously steampunk and they come 3 to a box so there are plenty floating around.

My friend and I painted blood bowl teams for fun, but now we actually want to play a game. What is the bare minimum we would need to get to see if we like it? Neither of us have ever played. I have halflings and I think his team are the norse if that matters.

Also side question, is there an eta for the ghur warcry box? That thing looks amazing. There seem to be previews, but no date yet. Thanks!

The norse are new so you might need thier special rules in Spike! Journal 14 but i think the halflings and all the game rules are in the core rules https://www.games-workshop.com/en-NL/Blood-Bowl-Rulebook-english-2020

Warning, halflings are meant to be bad, especially against a team like norse

Yeah and the warcry stuff is on a TBA basis

As stated, don't expect to win with the halflings - they're a jokey team that's going to probably get trounced by the Norse. You're probably going to learn the mechanics better with human vs orcs or a mirror match between either of those two. They're pretty good all arounders with a minimum of weird rules and ideal for learning the game.

Pass template isn't really necessary, there is a passing grid for working out ranges. There also are digital versions of the old rules available (NAF Competition Rules Pack) which means that you could try the game out without buying the book. The rules are a little bit different, more so between this edition than the several previous ones, but functionally you'll be able to tell if you like the game without spending however much money the rulebook costs and potentially wasting it.

Also you'll need some Blood Bowl dice.

I would advise against the boxed set as the teams it contains are weird and have lots of fiddly rules.

I bought the halflings as a fun speedpaint project to change things up and use different colors. The guy who rang me up asked if I played and I said no. He responded with "you picked a strong team to start with" in a not obviously sarcastic tone so I walked away feeling decent I had a good start if I did manage to play. Rip.

Wow, man that guy's mean, trying to lure you in like that! Regardless, it's certainly possible for you to win for sure, but you'll need to dogpile his best players and hope you can foul your way into inflicting some injuries.
It's gonna be rough either way, though. If you do play, I wish you luck! Do you have a treeman for your team, btw? (Can't remember how many halflings can get. Is it just one, or two, or?)

All I have is what is in the greenfield grasshuggers box. Maybe I bite the bullet and get the starter box to have an alternative team on hand, and streamline the onboarding process. People in my area seem to play more bloodbowl than warcry so my gamebox bucks are probably better spent there than the ghur box when it drops.

side note: Every time i see the biased referee models I have a sensible chuckle.

As an example of how jokey they are, the creators of the game stated in writing that people should stop sending in army and team lists for halflings.

I do love that the reason any halfling shows up to the death sentence that is a bloodbowl game is because theyll get a huge meal afterwards (if the survive).

Get yourself something to stand in for 2 treemen. The Flings couple of gimmicks are that the treemen are the strongest in the game, but they have no mobility and they can get stuck in place. The trees can also throw teammate, giving you the option of 1 turn TDs if you throw the ballcarrier and he lands successfully.

I've seen the 2016 Blood Bowl pop up on used board game marketplaces for less then 50 bucks. Even though it's outdated, it comes with a Human and Orc team.

Necromunda minis got greatly devalued because of the new edition with plastic minis.

Also I'm one of those freaks who think Mordheim models are far better than most of the stuff GW produced in the same era. These are just some examples of the awesome Mordheim minis I own. (Three minis are not specifically Mordheim but fit the aesthetic perfectly, them being the jezail guy, the jester and the middle magister.)
