I first learn to drive using my parents' Dodge Grand Caravan, and my current car is my mom's 2002 Toyota Highlander. Both of these vehicles have gotten that "mom" stigma with the former being used to haul tons of kids & their poo poo around, while the latter is between the universal RAV4 & the "masculine" 4Runner.

I found out that Toyota makes a AWD Sienna hybrid minivan, and I'm seriously considering getting it as I still need the ability to go somewhat off-road into the woods.

Not sure how comfortable I'd be hauling gas jugs/grass clippings/trash/tree branches/propane bottles inside a vehicle. I'm sure it's fine but I'd rather not put things like that inside.

The AWD systems found on Toyota appliance vehicles are not really off-roading material.

Well yeah but they don't make a 4WD Seinna hybrid.

Toyota does make a 4WD hybrid Tundra, but that's a pretty drat big truck. They also haven't released a 4WD hybrid Tacoma... yet.

I've never hauled trash (besides me) or tree branches, but I've for sure carried around propane bottles in my van with no issue.

I can already feel the stars aligning for me to get a mini-van in four or five years. We haven't ruled out a second kid, my old Escape is slowly falling apart, me + wife + baby + baby gear barely fit into her Mazda CX3. Doubly so if (when?) we decide to move out of the city. gently caress it, I like having room for hauling stuff around.

Punishing people for breaking laws in a different state should be anathema to conservative principles, but of course those don't actually mean anything.

10yo girl in Ohio is impregnated by rape. Family takes her to Indiana for an abortion where it is legal.

GOP pundits proclaim this is a lie because it’s ‘too convenient’ and ‘no identity has been given.’ Also ‘no arrests.’ It blows up in the right wing ghoul circuit.

Within a week the rapist is caught, confesses and is charged.

Instead of apologizing, or addressing the awful trauma of child rape, they’ve gone after the doctor who performed it legally in Indiana. The crime occurred in Ohio and is being pressed in Ohio. The AG in Indiana is pushing this hard and wants the MD’s license revoked over mandatory reporting.

https://twitter.com/mjs_dc/status/1547655938126913536?s=21&t=lcOEjvu7t3QGjetBRieicg

There have been congressional hearings with anti choice advocates stating that ectopic pregnancy terminations “aren’t abortion” (they are), or that if the termination is a legal exception it “isn’t an abortion” (it is).

The disinformation and doublespeak are dense, dizzying and frankly pretty loving scary.

how are they trying to charge the doctor if its legal in Indiana, or is this literally a "gently caress interstate commerce" instance?

regardless every single person involved in going after the doctor and this poor family should be first against the wall

It looks like they're going after her under mandatory reporting statutes. I don't know how it works in Indiana, but in Washington (and California I believe) doctors, teachers and child care workers are required to report any suspected child abuse. It's patently absurd to apply it in this case because the abuse had been reported in the state where the abuse occurred.

Anecdotal and I usually stan for most Toyotas even after working at a Toyota dealership for over 5 years (over 10 if you count Lexus too) but my friend’s wife had a (non-hybrid) AWD Sienna and he was constantly taking that thing to the dealership for poo poo. They got sick of it breaking all the time and traded it in for a Camry.

My dad has exclusively (I mean that in every literal sense of the word) driven ONLY Astro vans for the last 30-ish years. His most recent he got free tickets from a colleague for a horse race while down south for work and stuff finished up earlier than expected, and all he could pay attention to were the three spotless Astro vans down in the paddock. He found the number for the course and called around and bought the thing (22,000 miles!) and flew back down to drive it back up. It even has a yellow light mounted on top so he looks like an unofficial Pace Van driving everywhere

I loving hate Astros with a burning passion, they’re gutless, slow, break down CONSTANTLY, and handle like a wet loaf of bread on ice skates, I don’t know WHY he loves them so much. The one mentioned above blew out the serpentine belt on his way home with it and he got stranded somewhere in Illinois and had to get it towed back up the rest of the way to Wisconsin

Lmao I'm pretty sure they were the official van of the 90s-early 2000s in Wisconsin.

I'll always have a soft spot for them even though I agree about how they aren't that great. I learned to drive with ours. Parallel parking that thing sucked rear end.

I’m flying to Nashville in the am and while I am fascinated by flight, I loving love airplanes, and I am very aware of how safe they are, I don’t fly often enough to ever get used to the idea of hurtling through the air at 500mph, 6.5mi off the ground in an aluminum tube with no input into anything.

I just try to think about it like riding the bus.

That night we performed the rite and opened the gate.
Halfway through, I went to fix us both a coke float.
By the time I got back, he'd gone insane.
Plus, he'd left the gate open and there was evil everywhere.

The part I hate about flying has nothing to do with the engineering and everything to do with how lovely commercial airlines are to deal with. Especially right now with them cancelling and messing people around because they fired everyone during Covid and cry now they can’t hire people back into the same jobs at slave wages.

I have a big trip coming up, last week of the month I fly to Calgary, do some IT stuff in our office there for a couple of days, then a week's vacation in PEI for a family reunion where we will do another celebration of life for my mom, this time for all the Canadian friends and relatives. After that, fly from Halifax to Toronto and work in our office there for a couple of days, then back home to Chicago.

Four legs on that trip, and work is paying for three of them including hotels.
