One of those turboprop dealies is known for coming in fast and flat and then just dropping anchor over the threshold. in the 208 you can take 160 (Vapp+70) to 500AGL and be on airspeed on configuration at 200. wouldn’t do it with passengers though

LimaBiker posted:I saw a helicopter land on a football field once. A helicopter that's not doing medical emergency assistance landing on a football field is extremely rare here. When I lived in Bakersfield, CA, I was driving and heard a huge sound to my left and looked out the window to see a blackhawk flying ridiculously low. My route happened to be parallel to its, and I watched in amazement as it landed on the baseball diamond of a city park. This is a small park, just 26 acres. It sat there for a few minutes and then took off. The local news later that day reported that they were on their way to a base somewhere and had an engine warning light come on, landed in the park, checked it out to their satisfaction and took off.

They're the originators of the concept and had recently expanded their stable to two units, the other being a 50s firetruck with triple J-34s on the back. I think there are a few smaller but similar show trucks working the drag race circuit but these guys were strictly booking airshows because 1/4 mile just doesn't leave them room to stop. They're still going ahead with a show in Duluth this weekend. shame on an IGA fucked around with this message at 16:20 on Jul 14, 2022 |

Stuff like this is why I stopped going to air shows. We had a particularly cursed one in Tuscaloosa a while back that had a minor midair collision between planes and a cutaway on a paratrooper drop. I’m not sure I could deal with watching someone die.

My dad then let me know that at every Thunderbirds and Blue Angels air show he’s been too there’s been a crash. Glad we didn’t go!

Not exactly breaking news but this popped up on imgur so why not https://i.imgur.com/UbYj52E.mp4 "RF-4B-27-MC (photo reconnaissance model) was lost on October 27, 1987, during a Cope Thunder exercise in Zambales, Philippines when a photo-flare cartridge failed to eject and exploded in the rear-fuselage flare dispenser, causing a major fire and rendering the aircraft uncontrollable." Never thought a flare could blow up your plane but yeah why not. Thankfully looks like the crew got out safely.

As I recall, that horrible thing was being developed for E-4 and E-6 pilots to wear during times when there was a very real possibility of canned sunshine getting opened, and they spent god knows how much only to settle on "why don't they just wear an eyepatch and fly with one eye each after throwing the blast curtain?"
