ID card chat:

The problem with the way Blair etc talk about ID cards, they don't want just your basic info, they want to integrate medical, financial, criminal records in to it too.
I think I've said before, Egyptian ID cards (population approx 100million) have a number, name, marital status, DoB, home town and religion on them and a photo. That's all that is needed.

In fact a provisional driving licence would pretty well do it (I can't understand why they are not acceptable as ID).

Page snipe:

On June 12, 2000, a young man with a gun took the passengers aboard Bus 174 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil hostage. This documentary examines the event itself, the resulting media frenzy, the police response, and the perpetrator's background.

Oh this is better, more threadish:

I mean the other problem with that is that the level of centralization there makes them inherently insecure, the faff is the security a lot of the time, if you cut the faff out it becomes easy to lift that electronic verification data, so it's more of a justification for just cutting out red tape generally and relying on most people not wanting to do a fraud.

What you would essentially be saying is that you don't need better ID than a driving license for anything you get asked for ID for and a lot of stuff you shouldn't need ID for at all.
True, but when it comes to fraud the social element is usually the easiest one, so it comes down to "how bad is what they're trying to do really?"

So if we assume that the ID cards are a bit racist, because tech and because being designed by the UK, they might allow an Asian teenager to use his older brother's card to buy beer at the self service, but that already works with driving licences and half of off-licenses anyway, and it is not the end of the world.

Allowing people to sign documents online, it's just an extra layer of offline security that the current online document signers would have to adhere to, instead of a dozen different implementations, one of which randomly emailed me everything to buy a house in some other guy's name because he put the wrong email address in by mistake.

Most of the rest would be a combination of the above and the card not being the solution to all social ills through Big Data, but more like a bus pass that your aunt can also use at the post office. Blairites could just not loving stop themselves from making the whole thing sound like Papers, Please as a selling point.

I have no problem with ID cards as a thing. What are you even supposed to provide for legal ID if you don't have a passport or drivers licence. There's the argument from a civil lib perspective that the police could abuse it by using it as a pretext to harras minorities, but let's be real and admit that the police already do that without ID cards being a thing.

What does concern me about them is the data that's collected. Why would they need anything more than name, dob, address, photo, and possibly some biometrics like a fingerprint.

My second concern is the cost, specifically that you would be made to pay for ID. If its to be mandatory then it should be provided without cost to everyone when they turn 16.

The Tory solution will be ID that you can only request if you scan your existing ID (that you might not have) with a smartphone app (that only works on a few phones, and isn't secure), and then it won't arrive in time for whatever you requested it for.

Blairites could just not loving stop themselves from making the whole thing sound like Papers, Please as a selling point.

I guess I am more concerned that the push to make it usable for online stuff and as a primary form of ID is just going to make ID theft worse, because now there is a single point of failure that you have to have and gets used for everything. The only real protection you have against your entire life going to poo poo because of fraud is that because everything is so decentralized it's harder to hit everything at once, and when people do do stuff like use the same username and password for everything that generally makes it worse. If you're advertising this one thing that is the key to every part of your life that's putting a big target on it for fraudsters and I think is also likely to make it harder to fix knowing how the government is.

Given that you would have to have a very permissive recovery department for when people for whatever reason lose their one unified ID for everything or become victims of fraud, the question then becomes why the gently caress do we have all this poo poo in the first place if you're still going to have to post the government three bank statements to get your card back in the end? Why are we adding all this extra securitization instead of focusing on making it unnecessary? With better social programs you could stop hassling people all the time about their benefits, remove dependence on having access to your bank to get food/electricity/shelter. The whole need to have everyone electronically registered and tracked and verified to me seems like a problem of a society increasingly obsessed with restricting access to things for no good reason.

Just loving give people food and houses and electricity and water, you can only eat so much, exist in one place at a time, and replace the police with roving gangs of people who shoot crypto enthusiasts on sight and we'll have no issues with lecky or water.

Honestly, I live in Spain. We have id cards. It basically works fine.

In the UK we have to use things like NI numbers for everything which is effectively the same or you can end up doing bollocks with utility bills that you may or may not have, especially if you move a lot, rent or are NFA.

It's the uk of course so ID cards will be some kind of enormous PPE style contract scam then not work like they should, but not having them has downsides too.
