I think it's not wholly unfair to say that in 2009 the democrats were in a position to dominate American politics for a generation. if they had pressed their advantage and passed some big substantive measures to improve peoples' lives like m4a, and/or thrown a bunch of bankers in jail they would have been wildly popular. even many republicans thought they were hosed. arlen specter switched parties to D in 2009 because he thought he was sure he was going to lose if he stayed a republican (the republicans retook the seat in 2012).

unfortunately obama and the dems didn't want to do any of the things they were elected to do and saw their main responsibility as defusing and demobilizing the agitated public that elected them.

I think that’s most people.

Obama and the Democrats acting the way they did seems to have been a pivotal moment for politics and culture. The working class dropping out of politics and believing that any politician who promises to improve their material conditions is lying definitely hurt Bernie, for example.

The Obama administration poisoned the well for what looks like the remainder of said well's lifespan. The 2016 and 2020 primaries then proved that it was no accident, no mistake, but exactly what the party wanted - just in case there was anyone still hanging onto shreds of hope.

Obama really is a world historic figure, but in the opposite way to what he seems to have intended. Even organizing that push to stop Bernie and get Biden across the line, now Obama’s legacy has to weather whatever happens in the next two years.

I've gotten talked to a couple times at work about it and my response is that I'll care about it beyond what I knew already if/when a ruling party leadership figure gets any punishment for anything. The response is that. 100% of the nation knows that the ruling class are unaccountable to anyone about anything.

I legit don't understand why the libs love term limits. You can't possibly believe both that FDR was your favorite president and also term limits are good, term limits were literally invented to make sure another FDR couldn't happen.

If you honestly believe that our electoral system is democratic, then disallowing the voters to choose who they want is inherently undemocratic. If the system results in popular results, then there is no need to worry about someone being too popular.

imposing term limits was a republican thing for a long long time btw

because they saw that dems tend to stay in office forever instead doing it for a few years then jumping back into the private sector/lobbying like republicans prefer
