Travis from QAA has been doing a series where he talks about bad science influencing public policies. Travis is very liberal, and most of the episodes are hit or miss but the recent episode was about microloans. The big microloan rise seemed to have happened during when I started paying more attention to politics but I have 0 memory of any of this.

weren't microloans a big thing during the latter half of the Obama presidency? it's not exactly surprising that a novel financial instrument was used to extract wealth from third world countries. i really liked Felix insisting that Judaism and Islam were the two Abrahamic religions with the most in common on the most recent Chapo because it's totally a dumb Jewish guy thought that I've had as well

The big microloan rise seemed to have happened during when I started paying more attention to politics but I have 0 memory of any of this. i listened to a few and yeah they weren't good. i'm getting kinda sick of travis view but i'll try the microloan. the thing is microloans come in so many flavors. credit cards and increasingly spamming a bazillion GET UR CARD TODAY letters during the mid-late 00s were just a flavor of microloan. all the "buy this $2000 couch now and pay later!" was another one around late 00s and resurged around 2014. payday loans have existed since the 80s and are also exploitative microloans.

i remember hearing a presentation about microfinance when i was in high school, and even my dumb little liberal 16 year old self thought like "well its good to give bangladeshi farmers money but why do they have to pay it back". this was in like the early 2000s. iirc the shine started coming off microfinance as a panacea (i heard a lot about it in college too from model un types, of which i was one) in 2010s, latter day obama years, when reports started coming out that a lot of these microcredit loans turned out to be for usurious interest rates and people were killing themselves over it. who could have foreseen it...

my last employer every year made a big push for us to participate in some microloan company that made loans to people in third world countries. It was weird how they pressured u to do it, even gave u twenty euros to do so, the goal was prob for getting u engaged on it.
