I think the impact of the Aho offer is that team's aren't screwing around anymore with bridge contracts for young stars. Guys like Fox, Heiskanen and Makar have been getting paid as RFAs after their ELC ends.

I don't think anyone is really terribly aggrieved if you want to give up a 1st and 3rd to overpay for one year of a bottom 6 forward.

If a team were to use those compensatory picks to trade for Christian Dvorak they would be aggrieved as hell though

Sakic didn't like doing bridge contracts anyway, MacKinnon and Girard both got 7 years after their ELC, Rantanen 6 years after his ELC. Makar was never going to get a bridge deal.

I mean, people have been calling the bridge deal dead since Rick Nash, not to mention Draisaitl (which was a big deal when he signed it even though it looks good in hindsight) then Eichel, then Matthews etc.

The thing about the Aho deal is that it wasn’t an overpay, it was an attempt to get a player at a reasonable price hoping that a cash-strapped franchise would be scared off by signing bonuses and front-loading. And of course it didn’t work because billionaires aren’t ever as poor as they claim to be and also they’re so egotistical they’d never let themselves be publicly bullied like that.

Like the only owner you could reasonably rake over the coals with a $5M signing bonus is dead now, but if another team had tried to gotcha Melnyk with an offer sheet he would have just defrauded another casino or something instead of not matching.

Also, the Aho deal was a dumb way to try and get a guy. Signing a guy to a reasonable long term deal in AAV, even if it is heavily bonused is going to get matched 10/10 times. If you want to really get a star RFA you have to try and gently caress around like the Kotkaniemi deal and even then, only if the guy really wants to leave. Overpay on a one year deal, but with a handshake deal for an extension. The original team is hosed because they'd either have to continue paying the overpay deal as a QO every year or they'd have to let him go as a UFA. If the Habs had matched, they'd basically have been locked into a $6.1x4 deal or he walks for free. Meanwhile, the Canes probably knew what they were going to get long term.

Jury's out on whether he's worth the effort or money, but at least there was a plan to get the guy that didn't rely on the original team being cheap.

Maybe he should go home to Arizona, and get ready for Matthews to get there in a couple years.

They'll have their big new arena ready, dozens of prospects, and two hometown boys leading the charge.

The thing with offer sheets is the player still needs to sign them. It is rumored that they're offered much more often than they're signed, and it seems like players only go for them when there's a huge difference between what they're being offered by their team and another team, and the other team is also going to front-load it with signing bonuses just to increase the benefit to the player. I think most teams and players are generally a bit closer and it's rare that a team is lowballing a player that another team's GM is willing to stake their job on giving up draft picks and a massive financial commitment.

I don't know what the Hurricanes were thinking when *not* offering a 21-year-old center who put up 83 points a huge deal, though.

Tkachuk was born in Arizona while his dad played there but grew up in St. Louis after Keith got traded to the Blues. He was friends with Jayson Tatum in highschool!

Also, as I will keep complaining about , Blues fans will not shut the gently caress up that Matthew Tkachuk will eventually play for St. Louis because he is from here and they keep clamoring to trade Tarasenko or whomever to get him now.
