Where I live it wouldn’t be considered a heatwave as a heatwave is defined as 3 consecutive days over 40C (104f) or 5 consecutive days over 35C (95f) but I think it’s up to whatever meteorological organisation a country has

it’s a bad omen for the rest of the world but the way the British media is acting is pretty lol

The UK heatwave threshold is multiple days with a maximum over 25 or 26, because a hot day in the UK is supposed to be 20

Idk why this is hard to understand. The airport runways have melted, the country is not built for this

I live in Seattle. Last summer it broke 110, the roads started buckling, power lines melted, and some peoples' vinyl siding on their houses melted. We do not have infrastructure designed for an entire week of temperatures where the lowest temp for that week was 9 degrees warmer than the previous all time high temperature recorded

this is going to wind up just like COVID. now it’s a 32 degree day and they want people to stay home to be safe. eventually 3 months of the year will 32+ degrees, thousands will die from heat related illness, and it’ll be “stiff upper lip, see you at the shop.”

Enfys posted:

Yeah, average high temperature is 20 in summer. There isn't air conditioning in 99% of homes, and homes are actually designed to keep heat in as much as possible.

Ireland is a truly temperate climate where it's uncommon to get above 21 or below 0 and generally remains in a comparatively narrow temperature range year round. All infrastructure is designed around having a mild climate, and there's little ability to cope with extremes at either end. It's also humid, so when it's hot your house is basically an insulated sweat box.

If you aren't rich, you can't just hire specialists to install air conditioning or refit your house with non-standard windows or whatever. You buy fans to push the hot muggy air around and cheap mesh flyscreens that don't keep the flies out and stuff frozen peas in your armpits on your way to work and you suffer.

Sure things could be worse...and next year they likely will be.

people keep saying you "buy flyscreens" are they temporary?
over here windows just have screens on them all the time everywhere i ever lived

tons of American houses are new and have one of a few standard window dimensions, also they’ve been standard in at least southern houses forever. I imagine it’s harder when many buildings are over a hundred years old and window sizes are kinda whatever

Platystemon
Feb 13, 2012

BREADS
Standard sizes has nothing to do with it.

Making window screens of custom size is super easy.

You get these long tubes and cut them with a hacksaw to the side lengths of your window.

Attach the sides with corner bits.

Cut the screen itself roughly to the correct dimensions and secure it by rolling these squishy rubber strips (spline) into the channels in the frame over the top of the screen.

(You can tell that this is a quality product because “SMOOTH” is two of its four qualities.)

This is for windows already built with slots to hold screens and their frames. You’re going to have to retrofit some sort of attachment if your windows have never had screens.

On the other I guess it is a couple extra degrees today so thanks for the heads up I will go outside even less (this isn't possible.)
