Mono blue spirits Pioneer league tournament report:
Please note this was a paper league and took place over the last 6 weeks, so decklists were locked in 6 weeks ago (so winota and expressive iteration were live the whole time)

R1 vs esper ninjitsu (?)
Lose die roll
Win 2-0

G1: opponent plays a slither blade, so I know we’re off meta. I play a 1 drop and curious obsession. Opponent ninjitsu’s stuff in and I bounce it with petty theft.

Side out some countermagic for an unsubstantiate and witness protections (unsure why)

G2: I witness protection my opponents ninja lord (lmao) they try to drown in the loch ascendent spirit but I rattlechains.

R2 vs 5c gates (???)
Win die roll
Win 2-0

G1: I ride ascendent spirit and countermagic to victory

G2 have you ever aether gusted a gates ablaze 3 times? Because now I have.

R3 vs bant panharmonicon (?????)
Win die roll
Win 2-0

G1: i rattlechains my curious obsession’d mausoleum wanderer twice to protect from reflector mages. Opppnent has no fliers

G2: I counter back to back collected companies while presenting a clock.

R4 vs izzet control/wheels (finally a meta deck) (boo it’s Teran)
Win die roll
Win 2-0

G1: we both mull to 6. Opponent has a lot of cantrips and not a lot of removal and by the time opponent flips thing in the ice I’m able to redeploy at instant speed and have the clock.

G2: is a long and drawn out affair. I honestly kind of disassociated and thought it was two games instead of one. I don’t get any damage in until turn 6 or so, which is usually really bad. I do land an early icon of ancestry though, which is turns out is good.

Opponent plays and slowly flips a thing in the ice while we play the “end step flash in a creature, opponent removes it, I draw 1-2 extra cards” game. We get to turn 12 or so and I have 9 land in play, opponent cantrips, casts an iteration (decklists were locked in before the ban), and casts a second thing in the ice. So i mana beak it, opponent taps out to pay for it, and i geistlight snare it, then Flash in rattlechains, supreme phantom, and ascendent spirit. Untap, fire up 2x faceless haven and swing for the fences for all the damage.

R5 vs rakdos midrange
Lose die roll
Win 2-1

G1: mull to 6, opponent ha a thoughtseize so it’s a 5 card hand. Lots of back and forth, opponents at 7 but I’m stuck on two lands but have lethal on the crack back for exactly 7. Opponent plays a graveyard trespasser and goes to 8. I need to draw exactly a 1 mana spirit, and I don’t.

G2: mull to 6, turn 1 ascendent spirit chips in while I build mana. Wanderer in hand. I get greedy and read my opponent poorly and walk into a stomp on ascendent when I go to level it up but I’m pretty far ahead at that point anyways. Dive down saves a creature and rattlechains saves another. Faceless haven gets in for lethal

G3: another back and forth. Opponent lands kalitas, which skews the race math for a bit as I’m swinging for 5-6 per turn and opponent is gaining 3. Opponent is at 10 and doesn’t fire up his den of the bugbear so I make the risky decision to otawara kalitas during combat. He taps down to one open mana to replay it. I draw and play icon of ancestry. Swing for 9, flash in rattlechains to pump wanderer to make it exactsies. Whew

Top 8:

R1 vs UW yorion
I’m on the play

G1: t1 ascendent spirit, opponent plays tap land, t2 curious obsession holding up snare. Ride that until I get the very obvious turn 4 supreme verdict, flash in threats to rebuild the board, play another obsession, and the clock does it.

Sideboard: out shacklegeistx4, mana beakx1, brazenx1
In: icon of ancestryx1, mystical disputex3, dive downx2

G2: opponent sees 3 supreme verdict compare to my 3 curious obsession and eventually gets a big shark token and can activate hall of the storm giants

I switch one dispute out for an extra dive down here

G3: t1 ascendent spirit, opponent plus tap land, t2 curious obsession with dive down backup lets goooo. I make one small misplay here by playing a second faceless haven over My otawara (I always over value that bounce) and I am lightly punished when rattlechains gets portable hole’d. Fortunately I’m fine to battle back by drawing more cards and presenting a clock + disruption.

T4 vs rakdos mid (same player as r5)
I’m on the play
Win 2-0

G1: I go land mausoleum wanderer, pass. Opponent thoughtseizes and I decline to counter, opponent takes obsession and passes. I play shacklegeist and swing 2. Opponent plays bloodttithe harvester and passes. I play land, wanderer, supreme phantom, swing 7, clock is on. Opponent plays second harvester, sacs the first to kill supreme phantom. I swing 4 and petty theft harvester to opponents hand while it’s still summoning sick. We’re both in top deck mode but I have a brazen borrower I can flash in.

Side in: 3 dive down, 1 icon of ancestry

G2: we both lead off with land and pass, I cast ascendent spirit (I side out 2 in this matchup) on turn 2 so I can protect it with dive down, which is good because it counter a stomp at end step. Opponent untaps and pushes the ascendent and casts a bloodtithe harvester, which is fine because I untap and cast icon of ancestry. I’m tapped out so opponent plays a sorin and makes a 2/3 everyone gets a nice torn of sorcery speed haymakers. I play land 4, supreme phantom, pass. Opponent goes for the dreadbore and I rattlechains to protect it. Rattlechains eats a push, but that’s fine because I’m drawing two cards per turn with icon so I eventually just attrition them out with that and an eventual curious obsession. Drown your opponent in card advantage. I have a really nice play in this game where my opponent goes for k command to deal 2 damage and destroy icon, so I activate icon in response, and draw into a spirit with flash that I can use to buff a mausoleum wanderer big enough to counter the k command.

Finals vs mono green big deck (tiny black splash for 2 vraska main and 5 removal cards in the board)
I’m on the play as top seed
Win 2-0

G1: we both mull to 6 and I go land, pass. Opponent goes land elf, I flash in spectral sailor, untap, land, shacklegeist (no attack) pass, tap elf on opponents upkeep to stop the t2 kiora. Untap, play supreme phantom, swing with shacklegeist, pass. Upkeep tap opponents elf, let kiora resolve, opponent T can’t combo off and passes, untap, play land, petty theft kiora, swing with geist, pass. Upkeep tap elf, counter something. Repeat as necessary while building a board and countering key spells, reduce opponents life total to zero.

Sideboard in: 3 witness protection, 3 aether gust

G2: opponent appears to keep a hand of 2 land, 3 llanowar lef, kiora, cavalier of thorns (and draws a doom blade in the first 3 turns. I play into removal because you can’t fear your opponents 5 sideboard removal spells. I counter cavalier of thorns and my opponent luckily (for me) draws air, while I draw a mix of creatures and spells.

Yeah I came up with the deck name after playing against mono green exactly once and getting steamrolled.

After putting in actual reps mono green does feel favored for mono blue, the game is “delay the combo finish while presenting a clock” and NOT “counter haymakers”

Why I love being a Jund player: I haven't touched Modern since I added these Ignoble Hierarchs to the deck, and yet I'd have to change very little (if anything) to sit down at an event. It's mostly tweaking the lands to fit in a couple of the new Kamigawa channel lands that play nicely with Wrenn and maybe tweaking the sideboard or some creature numbers.

I refuse to completely take Bob out, though. Screw you, Ragavan :colbert:

Playing Modern @ FNM, I’m on GB Yawgmoth combo. Played 3 rounds (6 players, lots of folks outta town this weekend, normally we’d have 9-10).

Match 1, Omnath, I get it 2-1 after a savage game 1 in which Wren & 6 just bodied me and ate all my dorks before I could get off the ground.

Match 2, Belcher, first time playing this deck, I lose round 1 because I miss lethal on board. Doesn’t happen again so I get it 2-1

Match 3, Amulet Titan, I misplay Game 2 and miscalculate how to kill a Titan, and then forget again that I have Grist as an option for rough board states. I lose 2-1.

Overall fun, I enjoy the deck a lot but I’ll enjoy it more when I get another dozen or so reps under my belt.

Top 4'd a Modern RCQ today

Bant humans deck list:

4 noble hierarch
4 champion of the parish
2 avacyns pilgrim
4 meddling mage
4 unsettled mariner
4 thalias lieutenant
3 thalia, guardian of thraben
4 reflector mage
2 brutal cathar
3 shardless agent
2 Adeline, resplendent cathar
4 collected company

4 cavern of souls
3 horizon canopy
1 temple garden
1 hallowed fountain

3 sanctifier en vec
2 deputy of detention
2 kataki, wars wage
2 mirran crusader
2 dromoka’s command
1 sanctum prelate
1 Lavinia, azorius renegade
2 Outland liberator

R1 vs temur rhinos
Lose die roll
Win 2-1

G1: goes long and Is very close but opponent topdecks a stomp after putting me to 1 with brazen borrower

G2: Lavinia and meddling mage both show up along with a respectable clock

G3: opponent makes a misplay killing thalias lieutenant instead of unsettled mariner and cannot fury to wipe my board

R2 vs jund sagavan

G1: opponent misplays a bauble into unsettled mariner and shame concedes game 1. I also learn that Adeline’s token doesn’t have to attack the same target as Adeline.

G2: thalia and mariner help lock out my opponents interaction. Opponent is trying to avoid delirium with two Darcy’s as chump blockers, i get bodied by a torpor orb but Adeline swing for big every turn and runs my opponent out of resources.

R3 vs song of creation
Lose die roll
Win 2-1

G1: opponent cannot beat meddling mage and thalia and mariner game 1.

G2: opponent deals with 2 thalia and I hit the 3rd off of a cascade (while another is in play, whoops) I make a big misplay by getting target fixation and my opponent combos off when I could have instead dromoka’s command to make him sac an enchantment

G3: meddling mage on song, plus an Adeline to add a clock gets there.

R4 vs 4c yorion
Win die roll
Win 2-1

G1: I have a fast clock that gets under his interaction while taxing

G2: opponent has the t4 supreme verdict and I cannot recover well.

G3: unsettled mariner + thalia + sanctum prelate on 2 locks opponent out while they’re stuck on 3 lands. Eventually they find a solitude for mariner + fury for two other creatures but I have a lieutenant in hand for exactsies

R5 vs tron
Intentional draw into top 8

Top 8
R1 vs UW affinity
Top seed so I’m on the play

G1: I’m able to put up a respectable clock but my opponent is able to make two constructs and get a shadowspear which means it’s game over.

G2: t2 kataki opponent keeps a 1 lander. I also flip an Outland liberator

G3: good back and forth. I keep a hand with a clock and a kataki in it after we both mull to 5. I play a t2 Adeline, t3 coco. Coco also hits a kataki. Opponent portable holes it, so I untap and play the kataki from hand and opponent scoops.

Top 4 vs g tron
I’m top seed so I am on the play

G1: I feel like this is one of my worst matchups and my opponent had the ol T4 ugin

G2: I make two Misplays that cost me the game. (Playing a liberator into a blast zone on 2, and not naming oblivion stone with meddling mage despite knowing my opponent had one in hand) because I am dumb and tired.

On the yawg thing, +1/+1 and -1/-1 cancel each other now yeah? So 2 +1 counters and 1 -1 just become a single +1 counter as a state based action now?

I was thinking about it, but fulminator only hits nonbasics. I like blowing up everything. The land destruction is something I've been trying to optimize. Ideally I'd be on 6 or 7 land destruction spells.

Obviously the rhythm package with hydras and titans makes it non-optimal. Would the 2/2 body be better than molten rains? Maybe cut 1 rhythm and 1 fetch? I think the top end is a bit weak with only 4 real payoff bodies for rhythm.

all I can say for sure is that Bloodbraid Elf into Fulminator Mage loving whips rear end, and in general I think Fulminator Mage being in play can function as kind of a pseudo Magus of the Moon, it can sort of soft lock your opponent out of the mana they want if they don’t perfectly play around it, it can cause players to overthink and try to get clever. Plus you can board them out vs heavy basic decks

there's no real card like that. But "spell that grants 9 poison counters" triggered something in my brain and I found this:

MTG posted:

Q: "Has there ever been an Invitational card that was submitted and rejected right off the bat as being too powerful?"
--Shawn
Norfolk, VA

A: From Mark Rosewater, Magic Head Designer:

"Shawn,

"There have been two cards turned in that were rejected for being too powerful (in a way that development couldn't adjust for). Olle Rade, after turning in a red enchant world for called World of Bums with no rules text that we rejected (as enchant worlds had been retired), submitted this card:

Crazy Counterspell
1UU
Interrupt
Counter target spell. Put CARDNAME on top of your library.

"The second was Jon Finkel's original submission when he won in Sydney:

Wrath of Leknif (Finkel backwards)
1WWU
Sorcery
Destroy all creatures. They can't be regenerated. Untap up to four lands.

We would have rejected Bob Maher's original submission in 2004 had he not asked to remove it as his choice before he won:

Asp's Grasp
G
Sorcery
Target player gets nine poison counters.

"As for the rest of the submissions, we worked with what the winner submitted to make their prize card."
