The panhandle is very much a mishmash of every culture around it. It's just rural emptiness for the most part and the culture is not very different than any other patch of dry rural emptiness anywhere in the nation.

I live in the south now. I have also lived in west texas and the panhandle. While they are redneck, they are not southern. For example, my first experience with collard greens or grits was on a navy warship because those are not staple foods in west texas or the panhandle the way they are in the south. The food there is a mix of mexican and midwestern and has basically zero southern influence. I have far more in common with someone who grew up in eastern new mexico than I have with anyone that I've ever known in the south.

I thought the greens were steamed spinach and boy did I get a surprise with that first big bite.

I went to school for geology at a university co-located with the national atmospheric research lab and an institute for alpine and arctic research, and it was a running joke among my class that one of the first few lectures of any given course would just be an hour block of gloom and doom.

Monoclonal antibodies aren't really used anymore because they're not effective against omicron and new variants. They do have effective antivirals in the form of paxlovid, which he is on.

Also, if Biden dies, I think we end up with a vacant VP spot until after midterms and potentially through the rest of her presidency. This will be bizarre, because no VP means no one to count the votes according to the constitution and ECA.

Filling a vacant VP slot just requires a simple majority from both congressional houses, but there is no tie breaker for a tied senate.

e: prior to the 25th, the president pro tem would count votes when there was a VP vacancy, but they cannot cast tie breaking votes.

My brother recently caught the 'Rona. They gave him Paxlovid since he is a walking comorbidity. Within 3 or 4 days he is testing negative and feels great.

It wouldn't be the first time. Before 1967 and the 25th Amendment, there wasn't any actual mechanism to replace Vice-Presidents that ascended to the Presidency.

Yeah, I edited my post with some updated info. The president pro tem would probably be the one actually counting the EC votes, and there simply would be no tie breaker in the senate.

Read yesterday that there's a grand total of ONE monoclonal antibody that still works on the common BA.4/BA.5 variants. It's pretty rough!
