And would you say that over the last few years we've been moving towards progressive goals regarding the police and incarceration, or are we moving the other way

A bunch of people, for the first time in their whole loving lives, are feeling anger towards the police. They don't like feeling that way, and they want any excuse to feel another way. Going after the single sympathetic officer out of 368 is a good excuse.

I agree, we shouldn't go after this one cop to the exclusion of the others. All cops are bastards.

Oh hey where have I heard that one? :v:

Combined with the video, I guess his moral duty was to fight all the other cops who were in his way and the ones that escorted him out.

Given the mythology surrounding the police about how they are our protectors and poo poo, yes.

In the end, he is still one of the almost four hundred police officers complicit in this. Even while children screamed, he stood by. He only acted in order to get to his wife, but was easily turned away and escorted out. Of course, the entire focus shouldn't be on him. After all, all four hundred police officers failed. However, his specific situation and actions demonstrated that if police can't even protect their families, how are they going to protect people they don't know?

It’s not that they can’t, it’s that they won’t. The only ones that prevented them from doing the right thing was themselves.

True. We already know they have no legal obligation to put themselves in danger and save people. And I've heard "better to be tried by 12 than carried by 6". A lot of their training is based on threats to themselves. It's gotten to the point where the people they stop have to be the calm ones in those situations.

I’ll bite the bullet if they actually follow through on the redundant training and stop a shooter next time. Maybe a rifle rated shield in every cop car will give them the courage to save a child.

The shootings all tend to blur at this point but my impression is that the Uvalde police response is an extreme outlier and most of these school shootings are resolved within minutes, usually by cops going in and killing the guy or the guy killing himself. At any rate, I don't recall police response being criticized for other shootings.

Well that was the first modern school shooting and I thought the biggest lesson from Columbine - don't wait, just go - was the one that the Uvalde police ignored.

I remember the cops catching some flak because one of the teachers who barricaded a door during Columbine bled out slowly because the cops sat outside the school for like an hour after the gunmen had killed themselves.

They're not the outlier. They usually just wait for the shooter to off themselves or wander out and give up
