Hmm, yeah on the balance I agree. Hardcore should have a level of intensity and melodrama these matches just didn't. Like I was making a big deal out of the ear piecer spots, but that was a bigger deal than they made of them.

Still pretty fun, didn't feel like I wasted my time.

Still mad at All Japan. Big week in wrestling (it's a holiday weekend in Japan, they are always big). TJPW have the first 3 shows of their Tokyo Princess Cup, GLEAT brings us DOUKI & Kanemaru, AJPW have a potentially great Tag Team Title match between Honda & Ashino and Stronghearts of Irie & T-Hawk, NOAH return to the Budokan with Kojima vs Kenoh, a match that will probably be good but will make me sad when Kenoh loses & then at the end of the week they have a Korakuen double header. Oh yeah & the G1 starts. That Sendai show looks grim but Nights 1 & 2 should be great. Zero1 also continue with the Fire Festival but hosed if I can tell if any of it will even be taped. Wrestle Universe, why are you not showing this? :(

So it seems that NOAH, NJPW, AJPW and DDT all have some bullshit going on booking wise. Does that mean GLEAT, DG and the Joshi promotions are technically have better booking?

Not to say that the four I mentioned suck or anything I'm sure that they are still more watchable than WWE.

NJPW's booking has been good this year. It seems like they have a clear direction, everything's made sense and they've retooled House of Torture as a midcard comedy goober act. The only complaints I've seen about it are people getting pre-emptively mad about a Bullet Club civil war they've been told is happening even when the only Bullet Club infighting so far has gotten Tama Tonga (and somehow Jado) over as entertaining, really popular babyface and Jay White repeatedly owning Adam Cole (also good)

GLEAT's booking isn't as strong as New Japan's, mainly because they've decided to sacrifice their own stars to New Japan midcarders just like NOAH and AJPW

To me the biggest flaws in DDT's booking are Pheromones (which are very popular domestically) and Takeshita steamrolling everyone over the last year(which hopefully his year in America away from the show to show grind will improve when he comes back full time). It's still by far my favourite men's promotion to watch even if frequent segments have go away heat

I very much enjoy TJPW's booking, a lot of the matches can seem very random but they are all in service of the core of the promotion, the relationships between the roster members. There are still some things I feel were missed opportunities (Misao not challenging Rika during the PoP reign, starting to use Vanitas again for seemingly no payoff) but there's still time for these to be remedied as all the pieces are still part of the roster and that history doesn't go away. They just need another couple of people at the main event level, by the end of Miyu's reign there was very much a feeling that Shoko had to win, there was nobody else to challenge unless they started bringing in outsiders like ASUKA

Not to say that the four I mentioned suck or anything I'm sure that they are still more watchable than WWE.

NOAH are the most frustrating of the lot for their absolute refusal to push younger guys up the card. Kinya Okada turns 30 in November & has been wrestling for 3 & a half years. He has 5 singles wins, all against Yasutaka Yano & Kai Fujimura. The use of Inamura is even worse although he's slightly above the young boys, it remains that his only win in a singles match this year came in ZERO1. 2021 was the same story, got 3 wins in the Fire Festival tournament & even a draw with Taniguchi in NOAH but he only actually beat the young boys. It's loving moronic. The wrestlers are good, for the most part (hiya HAYATA pal) but the booking is WWE levels of making it hard to be invested in what you are watching because you know something will happen to turn poo poo upside down in the favour of one of Mutoh's boys despite them being older than Methuselah. I love Satoshi Kojima but how the hell does having a New Japan after thought beating Go & presumably Kenoh tomorrow help the company? It's not like these old geezers are actually drawing much. If the Mutoh clique were the draw NOAH seem to think they are then Wrestle-1 would still exist.

New Japan, well I gotta disagree with GWB here. The problem is perhaps less booking (though we'll come back to that) & more scheduling/business choices. Putting together the schedule every week my heart sinks every time I see 3 consecutive nights at Korakuen where they run almost exactly the same card back with usually 1 substitution per match. It's such an exhausting promotion to watch, nothing has heat, nothing has excitement. I still haven't watched the BOSJ Finals or Dominion which was unthinkable even 12 months ago, New Japan didn't just get me back into puro but back into wrestling full stop! I used to watch everything that aired & now I don't even watch every match on big shows. The bloat on the schedule hurts, Wrestle Kingdom at 2 nights is just another show. Ultimately, New Japan does less with more, by which I mean that their roster is tremendous & stacked when compared with All Japan, but All Japan gets more out of the guys they use. Part of it is that when AJPW books the Carnival they don't include Bad Luck Fale calibre wrestlers, & god bless them for that. Big New Japan singles matches are still worth watching but right now my interest in everything else is just through the floor. Getting rid of the IC Title still looks like a mistake. Far too much of their shows just feel unimportant & the wrestlers wrestle them like that. Which I get, when you're running essentially 1 show every 2 & a half days on average you can't be expected to go at 100%. But understanding it doesn't mean I like it. I'd also say there are so many guys who just shouldn't be wrestling anymore. Jado is immobile, Tomoaki Honma (despite being in 2 MOTYCs!) feels like 1 bad bump away from being paralysed (I know this is true for everyone but you get what I'm saying), Bad Luck Fale does not give a poo poo.

DDT's problem is just Pheromones are the worst act in wrestling, & I include NXT2.0 garbage. Haha, he just pulled down his pants & stuck his naked rear end in that guys face for the 109th time since this gimmick began. But it's at least confined to the undercard for the most part. Otherwise they've hit a bump in the road with the Endo injury which was unfortunate but you can't blame the booking. They've brought on younger talent in a way that's only bettered by Dragongate in recent times, they still do the fun weird poo poo you expect from DDT like the train match & the street wrestling tournament & just yesterday the Shunma & Friends In Drag vs Prominence & Friends show.

All Japan hurts because it's my promotion of the year. The Carnival was absolutely great from beginning to end. Kento has been Kento, the most consistently great wrestler in the world right now. Yuma is a bonafide main event guy now & he can go. Jake is Jake, a frustrating guy but still capable of some excellent wrestling. They've used outside talent/freelancers like Takuya Nomura, T-Hawk & Irie well, not dominating their own guys but still being booked strong enough. But gently caress. Ever since Voodoo Murders returned there's been a sinking feeling & it's come true. Right now I do not know if Total Eclipse or Evolution or NEXTREAM still exist. All the units seemed to collapse in a deeply unsatisfying way: Honda & Ashino came out of a heated feud to suddenly start tagging together; it's a great team so I'll live with it but from a booking perspective why? Ultimately of all the changes the only one that seemed to get any time on screen was Suwama leaving Evolution. And even that, he turned on Ashino & then Dan & Hikaru left with Suwama & then...they weren't with him? Deeply unsatisfying. Why did Jake Lee win the Triple Crown only to drop it at the first opportunity to Suwama, in a match full of the worst Voodoo Murders interference garbage? That match yesterday drove me loving insane, it was good & then the ref gets yanked out of the ring & it turns to farts. Imma quote Voices of Wrestling's Gerard Di Trolio's review in full: "gently caress this. DUD". Why is Suwama champion again? Why didn't Yuma & Atsuki appear ringside to counter the Voodoo Murders? Why is Voodoo Murders back in this company 11 years on from their last run in AJPW? Who the gently caress wanted that? Also & this is a smaller thing because AJPW's Junior division has been an afterthought for the longest time, why the gently caress is Tiger Mask here? What does he offer? Susumu Yokosuka coming from outside to hold the title was fine, because he's actually really good & elevated everyone he worked with. Tiger Mask is here & loving up a top rope Tiger Bomb/Driver thing. It's been over a decade since he was in any way relevant. It's all the more frustrating because I thought they'd gotten over a spell of rotten booking issues, hard to forgive them for chasing both Koji Iwamoto & Yusuke Okada out of the company.

So yeah, Dragongate are the best booked male promotion in Japan right now. I think GLEAT are excellently booked from the perspective of putting on shows that are worth watching but I do agree that their willingness to sacrifice their wrestlers to outsiders is frustrating.

This post is long enough as it is but as far as joshi goes, TJPW has a problem where they seem utterly unwilling to pull the trigger on anyone outside of Shoko, Yuka, Miyu or Rika as PoP champion. It's well past time Maki Itoh was elevated to that group, Mizuki should probably be in it too.

DG's booking this year has been amazing, yeah. Though it's been a little weird going into Kobe World, but they're clearly trying to build new stars this year.

Is HARASHIMA still considered DDT's ace? I don't keep up with DDT much but there was a long stretch of time where every time I checked in he was at the top of the card.

Nah, Takeshita is firmly ace now. HARASHIMA's last reign on top ended January 2020, & he only had the 1 successful defence. He's still doing fun stuff in the tag division, both with Yuji Okabayashi & Naomi Yoshimura, he's kind of acting as a mentor figure to Yoshimura now.

The Sauna Boys are DDT's aces in terms of drawing power and their position as faces of the company. Which necessarily includes Takeshita but the others aren't all that far behind.

Even Endo getting injured wasn't a huge bump in the road as Higuchi getting a coronation, a new killer tag team, and a two junior partner faction graduations simultaneously creates a lot of intrigue.

I love me some 2010s Suwama, but yeah, he needs to step aside from the main event.

You're gonna be seeing a lot more of this. Covid has exploded in Japan like never before. The site I'm looking at has Japan at 180,000 new cases today.

Corgis love bread. And Puro

A relatively light week despite 4 nights of G1, Tetsuya Endo returning to DDT from his injury, more Tokyo Princess Cup, an absolutely stacked Stardom show that looks must-see, & Dragongate completing final preparations for next weekend's big double shot at Kobe Kinen Hall for Ultimo Dragon's 35th Anniversary & then the annual biggest event on the DG calendar, Kobe Pro Wrestling Festival. All assuming Japan doesn't go back into lockdown...(I have no idea if that's even a possibility being considered) Also I wrote this post yesterday so it still has the wrestlers who are out with COVID on it, because I've not seen who is replacing Kojima in that 6 man tag. Riko Kaiju is out of the SEAdLINNNG show during this week too, with a broken bone in her foot

Significant changes to the Stardom card. Utumi Hayashita, Natsupoi, Mochi Natsumi all out due to illness. (+ others out due to injury and X is absent)

If that is all the absences to those Stardom cards, then somehow they will still have all of the top matches intact. Like the card is in no way worse with the changes and you can argue that one match got better. Though I wouldn't be surprised if there are more changes.
