I can’t stop listening to Vaxis Act II. It may be the best and catchiest record Coheed and Cambria has ever released. Not a single “it’s okay” song on it.

I just hope we don’t have to wait another four years for the next one.

I'd bet that as long as large swaths don't have to be re-written due to unforeseen global events like Act II, we'll get Act III in 2-3 years.

I like this but this doesn't sound much like the TMV I fell in love with. Between this single and the last one, this is definitely a new direction for them. Despite not loving the last single, it's been stuck in my head a bunch.

I think if you told me that there was a new band with Cedric on vocals and this was their single, I’d tell you this song is chill and groovy as gently caress and I like it.

This being a Mars Volta song makes me disappointed but I also have to realize they have no interest in making Deloused 2 or FTM 2, or even Bedlam 2. :sigh:

Ooh, new Mars Volta. Been a bit out of the loop but excited to check it out this evening, along with the cut Frances the Mute song posted upthread. That album is phenomenal in my opinion. I'm cool with the long spacy bits - makes the other bits even better and more impactful in my opinion; plus I have fond memories of walking my dog through the countryside, accompanied by my music player, IEMs and "fruity cigarette", just listening through the whole album and generally living my best life.

I finally checked out the new Big Big Train singer, Alberto Bravin, last night. For months after David Longdon died I was just too sad to listen to the band. I started to get over this a couple of months ago and spin their two newest albums a bit more in my car. I had tickets for two of their gigs this year, one cancelled and one postponed to September, and thinking about this got me to have a listen to who will be singing when I go. Got to say I dig him - a different voice from Longdon's, which is maybe better than trying to get an ersatz replacement. He seems to have a good blend of power and tenderness and I'm really looking forward to hearing him interpret the band's music. The snippers from the tour promo sound great.

We're seeing them at the Waterside Theatre in Aylesbury - it will be the first gig of the tour and thus their first gig in several years. The atmosphere should be amazing, and now the band are occupying my mind again I'm incredibly excited for it. :woop:

Yeah

Tbh while I definitely wouldn't say that their music has gotten worse over time, I can say that I've enjoyed each album progressively less - the last couple really didn't do it for me at all.

I do actually like these new singles a lot, though as mentioned above they both seem like pieces of a larger thing rather than standalone singles, so who knows what the whole album will be like. Deloused and FTM certainly had their share of more introspective/groovy-mellow bits too

These songs sound plenty Volta to me, just focused on the core of their music and not all the (wonderful and exciting) nonsense they built on top of it in their earlier work

Just listening to this album now, it’s pretty great. I was kinda iffy on the first two songs just because of the abundance of fx (rhythmic breathing in the first one, weird sounds like you’re turning your kitchen upside down looking for the butter knife in the second one - guess I was still foggy on the album at that point he he), but it smoothed out really quick after that. The title track might be my favourite song of theirs so far (and I fuckin loved With Dim Light, btw)

What bands are you into? Prog rock/metal is a super varied genre so if you list some stuff you’re into it’ll be easier to point you towards some bands you’ll like. I’m sure someone will find something good for you!

So Roger Waters just released a thing a live show from the Radio Kaos tour from '87 (which is still one of the most goofiest albums in his discography). Not bad overall, thankfully the show doesn't pull too much from Radio Kaos (which is such a product of the 80's, and is my least favorite album by him).

All 3 singles are strangely minimalistic for TMV. I would have expected their extravagance to show through at least a little bit, like on the Widow where the single has Volta signatures throughout. I like all the songs but at this point the sound of the band has changed in every aspect.

Although imho Cedryk's voice is being used in more appropriate and creative ways than pitching it throughout the album.

I'm guessing it'll play like Nocturniquet, but according to this leak:

https://www.theprp.com/2022/07/22/news/details-for-the-mars-voltas-comeback-album-reportedly-leak-out/

the album has 14 tracks and the 3 singles are at the beginning of the album, so there's still a lot of time for sprawling meandering ambience :haw:

Blacklight Shine is the only one of the 3 singles that's stuck in my head. It's still not the old long, proggy, instrumentally interesting Mars Volta that I fell in love with like 18 years ago back when I first heard Deloused, but at least it's catchy. The other 2 (Graveyard Love and Vigil) did absolutely nothing for me.

These singles feel like the band is going for more of a mainstream appeal than they ever have in the past, which is weird. I know they won a Grammy and they were on Guitar Hero so it's not like they're totally obscure, but still, their music felt more niche even when all that happened.

I dont think it has anything to do with chasing mainstream appeal - Omar and Cedric both talked a lot about wanting to make poppier, more concise music during the promo cycles for Octahedron and Noctourniquet, and Omar's solo music from the years between Noct and now certainly show that he's focused on that. I think this is just where they're at artistically.

Yeah, that's fair. I just hope Cedric keeps writing wild as gently caress lyrics on this album. I'm listening to The Bedlam in Goliath now and currently on Cavalettas:

"I am a deaf con of angora goats
Warning you all who pass this mote
It's only a matter of folding time and space
Before I become your epidemic
Is this your first time at my conventicle?
You better not talk if you came here for semantics
It's only a matter of folding time and space
