Well yeah, I'd prefer Truss over Starmer: at least Truss as PM would provide a few laughs.

And who the gently caress would want to see Starmer droning away on the news every single night, Christ.

Corbyn was just like all the other Blairites you say? What a fascinating idea, I've never seen you talk like this before! Tell us more!

I have said before that I think the unique and really new achievement of the Corbynism period is the concept of universal public services as the core ambition of 'socialism for the 21st century' amongst adherents of the new socialist revival, especially as the dust settled from 2017 onwards. That element really is novel! Of all the possible post-alt-globalization tendencies, it crystallized around something that continues to dominate thinking in the new generation of leftie think tanks even post-Corbyn. So, no, Corbynism was not just cynical Brownism ("Blairism with a human face") warmed over.

Much of the rest was opportunistic rhetorical imagery with no real ambition to engage in systematic indicative planning or revive tripartism, though (noting that Blairism, too, was not above engaging in such opportunistic appeals to nostalgia for NEDCs itself). I stand by that argument. So you want to spend more on capital investment; guess what, so do the Tories now, and nobody thinks that qualifies them as ideologically transformative.

I think it's fair to suggest that a hypothetical Corbyn government was never seriously going to engage in public procurement protectionism over a customs union, given the choice, and a lot of pro-Corbyn folks ITT likewise also asserted that Labour 2017-2019 really did have a plan toward maintaining single market access. Which by the same token means that speech's outrage at outsourcing to France was, in a pretty big way, dishonest. But of course, when the Tories are likewise lying through their teeth on Brexit and getting away with it, why not do the same? All's fair, etc. Reasonable political calculations and all, but let's not have that also confuse discussion years later.

(There is something darkly funny that the Labour soft left, post-Brexit, may now find itself obliged to follow through on the letter of promises that a hard left leadership would have been forgiven by its stalwarts for reprioritizing - but Starmer has had lots of reboots already so who knows if it would survive the next one)

Myself and iirc all my friends did that once we were over 18 and working - it's not rent-rent as none of our parents would have kicked us out of we couldn't pay, but an acknowledgement that as an adult you should contribute towards the household if able to do so.

Take your pick: Implying she's only there as a token minority to enable Novara to be antisemitic, the attendant implication that Novara is antisemitic, the core implication that the left is antisemitic and also the phrase 'useful idiot' and everything that implies.

There are also multiple examples from other tweets today that use Brown's name and talk about Novara wanting to kill jews and a have a second holocaust, she seems to have had a completely normal one.

I feel like Corbyn really hosed it by not suing the everloving poo poo out of anyone claiming he was antisemitic. Especially the tory resignation letters, it seems to have emboldened this new round of cuntery and is now harming anyone who drifts left of Mosley.

If she'd just said 'useful idiot', then maybe not defamatory. But she presented this all as fact and 'useful idiot' in the context of being a 'token Jew' both suggests 1) she's not qualified for her job but was picked on basis of racial shielding and 2) she's some kind of antisemitic "collaborator" with all of the baggage that entails. I'd suggest that alone directed at a Jewish person can be seriously harmful.

Combine that with the fact that she's a commissioning editor and Rivkah is a jobbing journalist (ie even though she works at Novara, she's open to eg writing gigs) and you've got a situation where this defamation could be witnessed by eg other editors and harm work prospects.

It's a colossally stupid position to put oneself in.

Should probably say it's unlikely Rivkah would sue. Much more likely (and arguably more serious) will be (or should be) the professional ramifications. This is not how a serious commissioning editor behaves and she's likely put herself in a troubling spot for anyone who's tried to get work published at the Guardian. The Guardian should have to do *something* about this.
