I doubt China would really give a poo poo about cutting off our access to consumer goods if we wanted to play pretend trade war, we ban a few Confucius Centres, they ban some lovely newspapers, bish bosh, but if we tried pretending we had the industrial capacity for another opium war it'd go in full reverse in about half an hour.

e: Peterbilt 220 is the American branding of the DAF LF, you've definitely seen a few, especially if you live in Kent.

Jeremy has been using his extensive crowdfunded legal fund to basically threaten legal action against any prominent figure who calls him antisemitic. In fact, you notice that most blue ticks generally go quite far to avoid saying that, when they’re not having a full public breakdown on Twitter anyway. A month or two ago Victoria Coren made a joke on R4 that was along the lines of “Jeremy Corbyn *bleep to imply censorship* Jews,” the point of which was obviously to express the frustration of the media classes being unable to publicly state the fact that they all know is definitely, 100% true but is annoyingly illegal to say just because there happens to be absolutely zero evidence supporting it.

It's weird; you'd think that Victoria Cohen would have more pressing concerns, considering her brother is a self-professed paedophile.

I kinda worry that there's a defence to being sued by Corbyn for libel in that it's difficult for him to prove his reputation has been seriously harmed by an individual tweet or comment about antisemitism.

It has, however, made him into a very, very smart boy with something like a university degree in Truth. My wife and I have been working our way systematically through Taskmaster and we're on the series now that features Victoria Coren. I didn't know anything about her, and generally don't look up the contestants ahead of time, but my wife and I both found her to be conspicuously unfunny and unfun in the first couple of episodes and got distinct smug prickish Tory vibes from her.

By episode 3 I decided to google her and, needless to say, my gut instinct was even more correct than I'd thought.

I think most people also realise that she's a loving idiot, and have come to the conclusion that a loving idiot is probably less dangerous than Rishi. We're hosed either way, but I think we'll be marginally less hosed with her in charge. She might accidentally do some good things.

I've watched a bunch of TV interviews with Keith, and he always pauses for ages before answering a question. I used to think there was a delay too, but now I think he genuinely just thinks for ages. Unfortunately the objective of his thinking is 'how can I make sure I commit to absolutely nothing' rather than to give a coherent answer.

Re the debate : I watched it, for my sins, and I think Truss did 'win'. She clearly didn't really understand the economic issues properly (but neither does anyone), but Sunak was so aggressive and condescending that he came off worse. He was also arguing for the thing which Tories hate the most (tax rises), while Truss is just doing Boris-lite 'take risks, believe in Britain' bollocks, which the base loves.

Rishi also kept on referring to the audience as 'people like you', which didn't come across very well.

It doesn't help that the stare is so utterly blank. Whenever he's asked a question he always looks like a drunk man who can't tell if you've insulted his girlfriend or complimented his shoes and kind of wants to fight about it but isn't quite sure yet. Then he agrees that his shoes are shoes while he looks like he regrets not throwing a punch.

The pipes are really long and the water currently coming out of them was still in the pipes at the time of the heatwave and is therefore still warm. Just keep running them and eventually you'll get the cold water

I know it’s not exactly a novel observation but Starmer’s constant assertion that preserving the status quo is “not ideological” is endlessly frustrating.

I’m especially salty this morning because gently caress All Landlords And Property Management Companies. We’ve finally found and rented a new flat, a downsize because rent in manchester is going thermonuclear, and everything was going within 48 hours. Some estate agents said it wasn’t worth arranging viewings because everything would go based on a video, so they didn’t want to “waste your time or mine”. It’s a nice flat! …but neither dishwasher nor oven work. Phone up the property management team, have to log a ticket through their website, then complete radio silence. :sludgepal:
