I’m not sure I can say the game with Mayor Burt Reynolds, dildo bat, luchador Hulk Hogan, an extended Short Circuit 2 reference, and Professor Genki is less lol-random than 4.

3 was admittedly pretty far in that direction, but maybe because it was my first experience with the franchise it was novel in a way that 4 wasn't when it came out and doubled down with not just the dildo bat but the rectifier probe and tentacle bat violator.

I played 3 first, really enjoyed it. Loved both 2 and 4 too. Also disappointed that we are getting a reboot instead of a sequel to 4, barring third act shenanigans that get the timelines to converge.

Not sure I get the a bloo bloo'ing about health bars, the gameplay looks sorta uninspired in that video but I'll wait to see how it is before passing judgment.

They wouldn't make it like Mass Effect where enemies take more damage from a certain type of weapon according to their healthbar, just because it is from a popular franchise.

are they doing anything meaningfully different wrt gameplay in the new Saints Row?

That video had the blandest and most generic looking third-person shooting ive ever seen. At least lean into being wacky and energetic and have the player dive around everywhere pulling off sick skill shots instead of, idk nothing at all lol. Like, the bit where the player gets on top of the car and rolls around looks kinda neat, but when theyre walking around and shooting ppl its zzzzz snooze city

I like how in Saints Row 3 there's a mission where you rescue women who were being sex trafficked and then give them to your pimp so they can work for him instead.

So this game popped up yesterday on my Steam queue and it's free so I gave it a try:
https://store.steampowered.com/app/2071530/HalfEarth_Socialism/

It's a game about saving humanity and the world from climate change ala Fate of the World. It's not as well polished and buggy (often in subtle way, for example, when you deploy BECC technology, it can provide energy at negative emission, great right? Except it'll immediately bug out the game so the world temperature no longer decrease), and the "simulation" and research is probably looser than Fate. Though it is quite a bit faster to play as there are only 30 turns to the game instead of I think 40 in Fate, and each turn has less decisions. A pretty big difference between this game and Fate is that through the power of socialism, you are no longer constraint by money. In fact, progress toward emission, temperature, and biodiversity loss reduction directly increase your political capital. Though this also limits play style where development seems strictly bad as it doesn't increase your resources while greatly increase resource consumption. It's also not as cynical as Fate, I think. You can slow development in the global south, but there's nothing like literally deploying bioweapon to kill everyone.
It was a neat evening's worth of play. I had somewhat different bugs - BECC worked incredibly for me in terms of reducing temperature (it just took a while after hitting negative emissions) but instead I had multiple electricity and fuel sources just stop working - my dam and terrestrial windmills just never produced power again after a certain year, and all my fossil fuel sources except coal switched to saying they'd last "indefinitely" while definitely not producing anything.

I almost certainly caused a socialism famine by my inability to tell from the UI how to actually increase resource production though.

I think we should get Jack Thompson on the case.

Are there any games out there that have a similar feel to Anthem? I played it last year with a friend because it was on sale for $2 and actually found it really satisfying, with loading screens being the only real detractor for me. It's weirdly one of the better co-op campaigns I've played in recent memory.

I didn't get into the endgame grind where people's opinions tanked on it; the announcement that they were abandoning the game pretty much ended it for me.

I felt SR3 was more random than 4, which for some reason just felt more tonally consistent with itself despite being an extended series of riffs on stuff.

And, weirdly, in spite of the fantastical and absurdly exaggerated scenario it was mostly about the characters. Felt like there was a stronger throughline from 2 to 4 than there was from 2 to 3.

What I've got so far:
Bannerlord
Kenshi
X4
Paradox grand strategy trash
Sands of Salzaar
Starsector
Battle Brothers (sort of)

It wouldn't really surprise me if there aren't many more, but is there anything that I'm missing?

Shadows of Forbidden Gods? All about kicking over AI sandcastles. And you could take over your own dark empire.

Destiny 2 felt good at launch but I played through the F2P content late last year and it wasn't fun, it felt like a funnel into the endgame raid content that I don't really care about. Anthem's gameplay has a visceral meatiness to it as well that Destiny doesn't have.

Warframe rules but my ~1000 hours are on PS4, and they haven't yet released cross-progression for me to switch to PC. It was announced as "coming soon" at their latest event so fingers crossed that's soon soon and not 2024 soon. Even with that stupid amount of hours I still think I enjoyed the time I spent playing Anthem more than it, though.

It sounds like I might have played the good alternatives already, sadly :(

If anyone hasn't played Anthem and bought into the "Anthem is awful" review cycle you should give it a try on Gamepass, it's a lot of fun until it's (apparently) not.

On June 30, Aspyr finalized a demo of the game, known as a vertical slice, to show to production partners Lucasfilm Ltd. LLC and Sony Group Corp. The developers were excited about it and felt like they were on track, according to a person familiar with the project, so they were shocked by what happened next.

The following week, the company fired design director Brad Prince and art director Jason Minor. Neither responded to requests for comment, but Minor suggested on a social media page that his dismissal was unexpected.
