Hell of a Way was fun at first because it was just francis and nate telling each other stories of stupid/funny poo poo they've done/seen in the US military

This is why I started listening to it as well. Also I worked with some military folks and it made for better talking points than whatever war crimes they committed.

It's gone down in quality quite a bit though. Francis is absolutely braindead, and never developed past being a troop. There was a recentish episode where they talked about army recruitment and Nate had to constantly remind that Francis that the podcast was against people joining the army.

Netflix has a History Dad miniseries about the Sengoku period. Wasn't "good". But it's the first english language thing I thought of.

remember when China was bad because they owned like 12% of US national debt but it was framed as being a majority (which is btw good for america, not bad, we had the money, that;s what debt is, china gave the USA a bunch of money for an IOU in a spreadsheet)

but then also bad for dumping the dollar. and also bad for currency manipulation. but also bad for taking american business overseas but also bad for nationalizing stuff and making it harder to invest in china and also bad for...

I always thought it was loving hilarious that dumb Americans would look at the arrangement where China gives them *literally all of the material stuff they need* in exchange for dollars, which they can print or create digitally at will for virtually no cost and conclude that this was a terrible deal in which the US was getting hosed.

That's because the Feds (a private organization) doesn't distribute the printed dollar to the US people.

Also this whole national debt ceiling topic is a fake wrestler fuel between the two parties, they know they are never paying it down.

quote:

I want to make clear that no one is forcing you to use Filipinx. You don't even need to be "okay" with it - I'm defining what this term could mean to a person. Me using Filipinx doesn't jeopardize your identity in a shared space, but gives room for someone else to be accepted.

1st - the term can be used to make nonbinary/gender nonconforming people feel more comfortable identifying w/ their culture. Dialects like Tagalog have both gender-neutral & gender-specific characteristics - "Filipina", "Ate", & "Kuya" come from Spanish/Chinese influences, right?

[note: "ate" means "older sister", and "kuya" means "older brother"]

On a section in the last tweet: by choosing to use "Filipinx", you have the *potential* for someone to feel accepted, while including yourself in the conversation. Our people are known for their generosity & kindness, & it would seem like us to invite more people to our table.

When homeland people say "Filipino" includes all of us, it's hard to believe these voices consider us on an equal level - look at the Family Code of the Philippines & the general disgust we see on social media for Fil-Ams/Fil-[Insert Country] from homeland people as examples.

The letter "X" doesn't exist in the Abakada (adopted in 1940), but I was under the impression that the Constitution of the Philippines (ratified in 1987) established the Modern Filipino alphabet with an "X". So if you're 40+, it's a good point, but not enough to be dismissive?

I appreciate that Filipinx could be seen as an unwanted Western lens on Tagalog, but have y’all looked up the definition? "Of or relating to people of Philippine origin or descent, especially those living in the United States". This could also mean Canadian, Australian, etc. (Please note: the Filipinx definition makes the point of being inclusive to Filipinos in the homeland - it uses "especially" when it qualifies the point about the US, making sure the definition leaves no one behind.)

(Also, if we’re worried about the “unwanted Western lens on Tagalog”, shouldn’t we be concerned about the name "Philippines"? It was forced by Spanish conquerors and then our original histories were destroyed by them, to the point where we only have hints on pre-colonial names.)

The definition hits on diaspora - "the movement, migration, or scattering of a people away from an established or ancestral homeland". Because our realities are separated, would it be hard to make the logical leap that our lived-in experiences are different from homeland people?

Let’s look at intention now - you've seen my bio, so do I really look like the kind of person who's trying to be divisive? Did you think my goal was to drive a divide between our In-Country and Diaspora peoples, or is it more likely that I can speak from a Fil-Am experience?

If you want a panel at SDCC 2023 to, say, interview In-Country Filipinos, let's do it! I'll apply to try & make this happen. But I have a sneaking suspicion the loudest people would find something else they don't like, maybe because a Fil-Am would be associated with it? WDYT?

Looking at *that* Reddit thread, it's becoming more apparent that the term "Filipinx" isn't the issue, but the fact that someone like me - a person who isn't seen as "Filipino Enough" - is representing us on the largest pop culture stage. I'm genuinely sorry they feel this way.

(To the people who think I'm not "Filipino Enough" or who have been very rude - I've tried to be as polite & objective about this, but the harassment needs to stop. My loved ones need to hear none of this, and your words are only reflecting on the type of person you truly are.)

In closing, I appreciate the energy placed into this, & this only motivates me to be more inclusive. I hope we can place this same energy into donating and helping with the earthquake in the Abra province in northern Philippines, & I hope to see more of our people represent!

TL; DR - it's liberalism. We'd been aware the "Filipinx" term since about 2017, but it's largely been brushed-off as "that thing that diaspora Filipinos / Filipino-Americans want to use that we're not going to use here locally because it's ridiculous"

what happened was that there was a panel at the San Diego Comic Con that used the term, and it happened to have enough of an audience/exposure that it kicked off this dust-up over the term, because SDCC is prominent enough for it to collide with way more people than just occasional twitter spats.

The Netflix show that was mentioned certainly exists. A lot of asians were paid to look stern over bamboo flute music, but it gets the broad strokes in.

RWN had an episode on the Korea campaign. Decent amount of Hideyoshi in it but not really about him.

History of Japan podcast talks about him a lot in a bunch of episodes. It’s an extremely dry podcast but if you can stick with the cadence it gets the job done.
