I remember someone breaking down why so many light novel and manga titles are like that, but I forget. I think it had something to do with "there's so goddamn many that you are forced to try and grab the attention of someone using ONLY the name on the spine of the book in the store", so that's probably why they're so weirdly overdescriptive

I just wish there were more straight fantasy series that didn't take the isekai route.
like was said, a fair amount of "isekai" have it as the opening page and then almost never reference it again. of the ones I mentioned above, the following have little to do with being isekai despite starting out that way: The Faraway Paladin(it does make occasional references to his prior life, but barely any), A Wild Last Boss Appeared, Der Werewolf, The Eminence in Shadow, Welcome to Demon School, Iruma!, Beware the Villainess, Roxana

and if you've not checked out any of the following fantasy series, I highly recommend doing so:
Delicious in Dungeon - a group of adventurers descend to the depths of a dungeon to rescue a party member they lost. They are poor, so must make do with cooking and eating the monsters they fight, with very detailed methods of preparing fictional creatures for eating. Probably my favorite series, period. Just incredibly well made in every way, art, writing, characters, story, worldbuilding, humor, everything.
The Knight of the Border, Bard Loen - an elderly retired knight goes on a journey to find his final resting place, and enjoy good food along the way. A really, really strong fantasy setting with excellent storytelling and fantastic characters.
Frieren: Beyond Journey's End - follows a nearly immortal elf through her journeys.
Heterogeneous Linguistics - a traveling linguist in a world of monsters, who aims to learn the languages of various monster races. One of the most fascinating series I've ever read, it focuses so hard on creating such in-depth methods of communication between various races and how their cultures work outside of typical human understanding.
Helck - Helck was an ADTRW darling for a while, and recently was announced will be getting an anime. Follows the titular character and his companions in uncovering the truth of their world, a very solid(and often very silly) fantasy series.
Ancient Magus Bride - not medieval per se, but deals almost entirely with european fae and mystical creatures and mythology in a way I haven't really encountered in many other manga or anime. outstanding characters and worldbuilding. Has an anime, I haven't watched it but hear it's very good.

More specifically with this one, It's following Frieren's journey to pay respect to a fallen comrade who was the big destined hero who saved the world from some eighty years ago and passed away over twenty years ago when the story is set. She still looks the same, and the original party's all old or passed on. The immortality of elves is very much a prevalent element of the story, with it actually making note how long it's been since the Hero passed every so often when a new arc starts while she's traveling with her new party.

And the year count's been conspicuously increasing over the story so far as time passes on a very long journey :ohdear:.

also a lot of these LNs have more normal titles when they're on web novel sites or something and they're altered into these names by publishing houses. because if theres one thing execs and editors aiming for major adaptations love, it's sticking to what works.

Can't sleep, Kuhns will eat me.
Looking for recommendations for myself for this season. I cringe at porny poo poo, am not really entertained by harem poo poo, but I'll overlook it for a story I like (danmachi), and really won't bother with pedo poo poo or rapey poo poo, but am willing to overlook some of it if it's a hook early on in the series, but goes away eventually.

I really like jobless reincarnation after it got over most of the lewd poo poo. I like Made in Abyss since it got over the strung up naked poo poo real quick. Loved spy x family. Last seasons trapped in a dating sim was fun. I liked Shield Hero and So I'm a spider, and Dr. Stone in the last couple of years.

My list for this season so far is:
Made in Abyss
Call of the Night
Lucifer and the Biscuit Hammer
Uncle from another world
Danmachi IV (need to watch III first)

I'm sure I'll drop a couple pretty quickly. Anything else I should be looking at? I usually look for the :siren: in the season OP, but they're not there yet.

EDIT: Re:Zero was great despite the harem type stuff.

I'm liking Summer Time Rendering a lot. There is some horny there, but if you enjoyed both Made in Abyss and Mushoko Tensei then it shouldn't be an issue, since both of those are on, like, an entire other layer of horny.

S2 is genuinely the most boring, poorly directed, half-baked train-wreck of a thing I've watched in forever. The real crime here is that there were so many drat good shows in the same season that actually deserved a sequel, but instead this turd got renewed for S3.

Goddamn not many shows manage to piss me off so much but somehow this one irks me bad

If I recall, one of the committee members of the anime is Crunchyroll who has exclusive rights(maybe, needs confirmation) to havenon their platform(at least for initial runs hence confirmation). If gets more seasons, there's one of your faces to punch.

Started reading Isekai Izakaya Nobu, it was pretty generic/formulaic with the standard "people from a medieval civilization in another world are AMAAAAAZED at the incredible modern tech/food preparation" for a few chapters initially but it has really started getting more interesting a dozen chapters in with developing the world and characters more effectively. Most importantly with a food-based series, it makes me really goddamn hungry, I probably shouldn't read this before bed

I like Taisho despite him having very little development at all, the series does a pretty good job of just making him a good dude without even saying much.

Edit: okay, chapters 13 and 14 are just amazing. What a fun, laid back series, that almost never goes anywhere but the bar itself, but that's okay because it's a good enough time contained to even that small space.

Edit: ch16: hell yes, when they nonchalantly accepted literal silver coins as payment in the bar in the first chapters, I was hoping they would delve into that a bit deeper eventually. Turns out they just straight up sell it as silver by the ounce to an antique dealer, lol. Also this nobleman dude is a straight creep and ruining the vibe

if youre referring to stuff like berserk where its an action manga with a lot of blood/graphic violence you're mostly looking at seinen manga, which isn't really a genre descriptor so much as 'aimed at adult men,' but most seinen action manga tend to fit that mold. stuff like berserk, vinland saga, etc.

Hmm yeah I know seinen, I thought there's a sub-genre for stuff that features gore. Like I remember reading some sci-fi-stuff (by the guy that made Riki-Oh?) where people get tortured in hosed up ways.

I was thinking that or, like, guro. Ironically derived from the word grotesque and not the word gore. There's a lot of like, horror guro type stuff where its just a bunch of hosed up yet artistic depictions of heavy violence, though fair warning that you can also find a lot of extremely weird porn if you add the word 'ero' at the front of it.

Any good series about people who are married or already in longterm relationships? I absently came across a few videos of I Can't Understand Whst My Husband is Saying and I thought it was cute and refreshing. Weirdly, the first thing that comes to mind is Astro Fighter Sunred. It's not primarily about that, of course, but Sunred and his girlfriend Kayako have been living together for some time, and their relationship is pretty established, with humor coming more from how familiar they are with each other than for any bits about starting to go out.
