The (great) article I found this in reprints it an an example of an insufficient modification to the EBM paradigm. It is originally from this 2016 paper.

As much as Twitter sucks, yeah, the person who made that chart doesn't understand what it's measuring. It's basically twitter saying they think their margin of error is 5% when they tell advertisers "this many daily human viewers of your ads" rather than measuring how many http requests

Twitter has consistently been confident that the proportion of active accounts which are bots is below five percent. They just don’t get more granular than that. Maybe it was three percent one quarter and four percent a few quarters later. Who cares? Plenty of other stuff works like this all the time. Like, is it suspicious that my 99.9% pure reagent has always been sold me to me as “99.9%”? Of course not. Maybe one batch tests at 99.92% and another at 99.94%. It doesn’t matter as long as it meets the advertised threshold.

Its actually more important than that. A terrorist planted a bomb on our favorite dipshit and if twitter hits more than 5% bots per hour Elon Musk will literally explode.

While on vacation we had stopped in a town near Philadelphia. Since our hotel was pretty much a dump, she looked up the safety of the town. Mrs. Underbridge: Oh, it's pretty safe. Only a one in forty-two chance of being killed. Me: PER DAY!?!?! Just a reminder that contextualizing your stats is important!

Isn't it a known problem in mathematics that a trend can appear to be regular, but at some point change? Also, I do note that the description of the number of buttholes does not confine the buttholes present to a single individual. Ergo, the authors self reported data shows some interest in orgies/gangbangs when the number of participants reaches a critical level. Science!

It's more of a statistical issue. The problem is that fundamentally quantitative models assume that the future will be like the past and if that turns out not to be the case, then whatever model you've fit to past data doesn't need to be of any value. There are a lot of ways to capture the idea of a data generating process changing over time, and some of those models are even useful, but you always run into the possibility that something you haven't seen before happens.

You could improve the graph by dashing the line >6 buttholes and putting "office of butthole responsibility" on the bottom.
