Frankly it's a little embarrassing. My dog is a rescue, he has many, many weird hang-ups, and he is not food-motivated, not reward-motivated, not ANYTHING motivated. Fortunately he is a very gentle, mild, loving little dog, because his absolute obstinacy when it comes to training would be a real problem if he was less gentle. Anything that smacks of manipulation or tricking, i.e. training, sets off his triggers and he gets really watchful. You can trick him. Once. And that is your lifetime supply of tricking our Henry.

My little guy will have one in three kibbles fed to him be drugs he hates as long as you keep rocketing in kibbles after the pill. He'll give you a look of betrayal while the gross pill goes down but he won't stop chomping.

I just noticed something today that has probably been slowly developing over the last 6 months. I've posted before about my very withdrawn rescue dog Henry, and all his weird little compulsions and rules. I realised today that he has been wagging his tail to communicate how he feels outside situations where he was very excited. He always wags his tail when the doorbell rings and he has a mighty bark about possible intruders, but lately, he wags when he's quite calm and comfy, and it's to let me know he'd like to do something. Example: today I was sitting at the computer, turned to look at him, and he, lying quietly on the floor, started wagging briskly. I realised it was around 5 o'clock and asked him if he wanted some crisps. The wagging intensified After 5 years with us, he is still learning that he can ask for things and it is OK.
