U.S. State Dept approves potential sale of F-35 fighters, munitions to Germany

WASHINGTON, July 28 (Reuters) - The U.S. State Department approved a possible foreign military sale to Germany of F-35 fighter jets, munitions and related equipment for an estimated cost of $8.4 billion, the Pentagon said on Thursday.

The potential deal for the advanced stealth fighter came after German Chancellor Olaf Scholz pledged an upgrade to his country's military following Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

The principle contractors for the deal include Lockheed Martin Corp (LMT.N), Boeing Co (BA.N) and Raytheon Technologies Corp (RTX.N), the Pentagon said.

The Pentagon's Defense Security Cooperation Agency notified Congress of the possible sale on Thursday.

Despite approval by the State Department, the notification does not indicate a contract has been signed or that negotiations have concluded.

The notice of a potential sale is required by law.

Germany said in March it would buy 35 U.S. F-35 fighter jets to replace its aging Tornado.

The F22 is pretty good when it is flying, nothing can really even come close to being able to shoot it down without F22 pilot making a big error. But it has a tiny problem in that it is never flying.

It's also a little insurance policy against the F35, if Australia or the UK or whoever elects a socialist to power and resists the CIA coup then the F22 can easily destroy all their F35s in a week or two. Make sure you don't elect the wrong person.

A few years ago the government was trying to cold start production of parts because they realized they hosed up but I don't think it ever actually happened

Yeah, and since then the US has been forced to cannibalize parts for them, and the combat readiness rate for the remainder of the fleet is pretty abysmal. There just aren’t enough of them in one place to make much of a difference.

Yeah and , it sounds like the F-22 was given minimum support and they have constant issues with having enough maintained personnel. The USAF one way or another has been trying to kill the program as fast as possible.

Basically, enough are kept around as symbolic gestures (we are sending a grand total of 6 to Poland).

I believe of one combat mission profile, and that is of the remainder of the fleet, which is far less than what were built.

I guess since the F-35 program got even more expensive you'll have to increase your claimed capabilities accordingly? Sure it's the most expensive plane ever, but it can do all the jobs, ALL THE JOBS.

The f35 has a bunch of variants and can be exported all around the globe which means big dollars for the MIC.

The f22 cannot be exported to other countries, it is an America only airplane. If America is not buying them, people aren't getting paid for them. The initial contracts were met and it was time to move on to profitable endeavours.

F-35 was supposed to be the less expensive alternative to the F-22. It didn’t turn out that way.
