I mean, there's a pretty distinct difference between sexualized samus aran or whatever other adult characters and sexualized squid children, yes

neither should have been posted, but the latter should've been severely punished immediately, and it wasn't for whatever reason

I'm playing No Man's Sky again. I never realized "Expeditions" were the seasonal mechanic. Makes sense to make players start from zero but guide them through the new mechanics using quests. By the I'm done with the Expedition I'm probably not going to want to go back to my original save, and it won't take me that long to make a giga-bajillion credit farm again.

Being able to actually use your freighter as a mobile base is fantastic.

Yeah you can TP yourself and items back and forth no problem once you have the right installations/mods. Buying low/selling high is easier than ever once you have a GTN terminal on the freighter as well.

I believe when it comes to NMS, "not able to do that before" is always a yes. Last time I played NMS like a year ago all you did was fly around to gather stuff, supposedly there was automation but that was tucked behind stuff that I never got around to. Now its got settlements and other junk going on.

Been playing Helium Rain because I got it in one of the itch bundles, and its' a charming miniature scale X-series like game. You know the drill, you start out in one ship, run odd jobs til you can slowly work your way up to owning a vast number of space stations and ships. Its set in the remains of humanity's first extrasolar colonial effort, and set entirely in the orbit of ths stunning blue gas giant.

Yakuza 5

13.48% completion
28 hours

Okay, there's no polite way to say this, but this game is dumb, like terminally dumb, in a way I have never seen in the Yakuza series up to this point. Kiryu fights off full grown tigers in Y2 and even that made more sense then this game's entire plot. Nearly cutscene I was either going "uh, isn't this contradicting something from a few hours ago?" or "wow this is dumb as poo poo". There's just so much that doesn't even work within the soap opera context of Yakuza, and I'm ignoring the fact that guns are apparently some kind of quantum existence that can easy solve problems in one cut-scene then cease to exist when they could've solved a nearly identical problem in another cutscene.

The actual game though is brilliant. Probably the best in terms of what is on offer for play and variety of side content. It's a repeat of Y4 where it's different pov characters per chapter, just this time 5 characters instead of 4. I think there must be some background as to why Y4 ended with the Kiryu chapter but Y5 starts with it. Yakuza 4 definitely struggled to find it's identity and Y5 is a lot of the same. Who is supposed to be the one carrying the franchise flag? Akiyama seems like a good choice as he has actual charm and charisma. Saejima is just Hillbilly Kiryu without any personality beyond screaming about sworn brothers. Given that there's another completely new face and the previous new guy from 4 didn't return, I don't expect too much from him.

The game shines more or less in doing exactly what Yakuza games have always done, setting you up to roam vibrant, exciting locations with tons of stuff to check out. The side missions for each character are insanely in depth and deep, even though you can pretty much skip it entirely for the 3 male characters and miss nothing. There's all the standard Yakuza sidequests ranging from "beat people up" to "chase someone and beat them up" and then the weird and wacky ones that usually end with beating someone up. Basically, if there's anything to like about Yakuza as a franchise, it's in this game. Still, given that I didn't even hit 15% completion you can tell I didn't engage with most of it.

It's honestly an extremely impressive game that I could not stand having played so many Yakuza games in the last year. The plot makes Death Note look grounded and realistic. Half the time Shinada was talking I wanted someone to punch him in his face even more so after the Truman Show reveal. Major dramatic scenes have 0 weight because the insane plot means its just a constant stream of shocking reveals trying to outdo the previous one and they all fall flat because you cannot take them seriously.

8/10.

Around Yakuza 4 they were trying to figure out how to properly retire Kiryu, basically - he doesn't actually have any supernatural powers (regardless of plot armor/strength and the ridiculous things he can get up to gameplay-wise as well), and since he'd developed his character pretty firmly, they were feeling the constraints of years of writing the same protagonist and how that limited what he could do in the story. But since he also felt "indestrucible" by that point, they decided to save him for the end in 4. So really it's kind of about fishing around for a successor, feeling out what was popular with fans and such. At least, that's how I generally understand the circumstances as the series progressed.

Yakuza 4 was called Like A Dragon 4: Successor to the Legend in Japan so, yeah. 5 was called Like A Dragon 5: Fulfiller of Dreams in Japan, just to further drive in the theme of dreams and how we can lose sight of them or be twisted by them.

yakuza 5 is thematically coherent, which is more than you can say for 4, but that theme gets buried in so much stuff on top of the usual series convolutions that it's barely visible, and it has maybe the biggest dud of an endboss because it has to all but lie to your face to make the reveal happen

shinada's still the best though
