Nikita Parris came on as an (admittedly late) substitute and is black. I wonder if being able to take your kid to training or matches 3-4 times a week is a barrier to young women from lower income households being able to play at professional clubs. I had a [third?] cousin who was at a men's club as a junior and his parents would end up driving him all over the place for training and matches. Probably spent upwards of £5k per year on petrol alone.

Does anyone know much about Prospect as a union? Are they decent? I had no idea that there were people at my work who are part of them and they have recently been getting the message out about rejecting our companies poor pay offer that's well below inflation in favour of one much closer to inflation. Obviously I agree with all this and would much rather be paid fairly but I know nothing about Prospect themselves.

This has very much been the case historically in men's football so no reason it wouldn't be the same - especially given the lack of women's clubs to play for. At least with mens football there are the 92 professional clubs of the pyramid (and more below that) compared to the paucity of options in the women's game. Pele's dad was a player and an injury ended his career. His mum was apparently against Pele playing too because she didn't think it'd work out.

Financual situation is very much a factor. My stepdad was apparently quite the player and was offered a trial with a big club when he was 14 but his dad had a long term illness and his employer at the time (this was the early 60s) basically said 'if you go for that trial you can forget the job' so he had to give up the dream.

A lot of the training grounds etc are in suburbs or towns outside the urban centres, and to get there requires EITHER several hours worth of bus journeys and the requisite bus fares, OR a parent / guardian with the time and means to drive you there. Hence : most female pros are relatively affluent, and relatively white.

I seem to recall hearing last night during the ending celebrations that the striker who scored the winning goal could only afford in her teens to travel to outside the stadium and buy a booklet outside the stadium before returning home.

They're the civil service union among other things, so they're generally more in favour of compromise over confrontation. And as others have said when it comes to pay etc. your local branch is more important. Get involved and make it more hardcore if you want.

Sounds like every talented young footballer should move to Dingwall, because Ross County's training facility is next to the stadium, & even if it was in the suburbs, well, pretty sure you can walk from one side of Dingwall to the other in about half an hour. As it is, it's probably under 10 minutes walk on matchdays from the finest cultural hotspot in Dingwall's town centre to the football ground. And yes, that hotspot is a Wimpy. Perfect for a working class family, aside from the total absence of employment in the area.

My only lasting memory of Wimpy is that drat sausage curled and cut up into a bap. Oh, and the brown derby. Oddly enough there’s one in South Bermondsey, the last bastion of the white working class in south east London (Millwall territory).

They're gonna do that aren't they. Quietly dispatch the stairmaster for someone slightly more politically acceptable to the left and folks will eat it up. I mean, i do hope they are that politically shrewd to realise most people think the leader is the problem and use Starmer as a bullet shield, but I have my doubts.
