the very tiny bit of ground i can give is that it's inexplicably mainstream enough that it's got both a live action movie and a switch/playstation game upcoming, but it's still something that is a massive red flag if you see or hear anyone talking about being a fan of it

I think the Widdershins RSS must have changed or something. I've been using Feedly for RSS feeds with the Feedly Notifier in chrome and the feed I was following (plus 891 other people since feedly shows you that number) stopped updating on the 22nd, while the feed currently on the site (followed by 22 other people on feedly) has the latest update. It's weird when these things break and I feel like I only go through my RSS feeds a couple of times a year to see if I missed something breaking unless I notice the absence. I guess I should check more often because: I keep some of them in there to remind me to go look for them sometimes though. Lot of dead comics I liked.

In slightly less ban-worthy news, Tatsuya Ishida is now full-on "gays are pedophiles" and obliquely advocating violence.

You can see it if you watch the thread; the stuff back when people read it cus they liked it, rather than hatereading being his only source of attention, he was super pro-porn, then he slips into this weird porn addiction/antiporn phase before it transmutes into anti-sex worker. It's usually how it goes.

The rapidity with which Ishida's descended into anti-vaxx, Christian fundamentalism, Trump boosterism and (most incredible to me) unironic David Icke lizardpeople conspiracy brain stuff is wild. Like there are multiple recent Sinfest strips about how politicians are lizards in skinsuits, and given everything else, it's unclear to what degree this is intended as a metaphor. The homophobia's more extreme, but not new - it's notable though that Monique's Wholesome Lesbian Relationship has been quietly shuffled offstage as his window for what "acceptable gay person" looks like shrinks.

Even that tracks with his TERFdom to an extent; women (and therefore women-on-women relationships) are chaste, pure beings that must be protected from the evil encroaching men who want to corrupt them or abuse them. Note that despite being in the second-horniest comic we discuss in this thread, they've never done anything more than hold hands; women don't want sex, and if they do, they're icky and impure whores (the sexbots).

That twitter thread from a while back going through sinfest was still remarkable how it looked like it would be a mostly slow lean but then it took a sharp right turn over the course of one day and then proceeded to take even harder turns again out of seemingly nowhere

I think only time something gradually shifts rather than suddenly crashing in is the comic's attitude toward porn and sex - it's always presented as a guilty pleasure, the focus just steadily changes from "pleasure" to "guilt". It's also worth keeping in mind that Ishida is in his fifties. A lot of his poo poo makes a bit more sense in the context that he's realising he's getting old and the world is leaving him behind.

It’s honestly amazing (and stomach-turning) to read through Sinfest strips over a few weeks and see how often he jumps from one right-wing conspiracy obsession to another, lagging the general discourse, but with no apparent self-awareness how rapidly he rotates from fixation to fixation, demonization to demonization. There was a brief period of explaining the transhumanist master plan for humanity and then that’s been lost because that one is only an occasional flirtation for most of the right, so it’s gone. Meanwhile Ishida has the same smug right-wing idea that the left and center are constantly just pivoting to whatever new idea is popular because everyone reacts to the news when the news happens.

Everything else is just window dressing he'll rearrange every so often to appeal to a different target audience who might not think that poo poo marks him as a loser A Wizard of Goatse fucked around with this message at 17:44 on Aug 1, 2022 |

You're in your thirties. You're in your prime. You enjoy life's pleasures, and that's what you draw. You're single, and obscure, but that'll all change once you become a big-shot syndicated cartoonist and your name is everywhere. It's only a matter of time - you're telling it how it is, not like the safe lazy jokes the big names come out with. Just wait til they hear your voice. Everyone recognises the truth! You're in your forties. You're single. The internet likes your stories, but that hasn't brought you the success you wanted. Where did you go wrong? Why don't people vouch for you? You think back to those feminists from college. What if they were right? You look at your work, and by god it's everywhere. You've been terrible to women - no wonder they don't like you! Well, that's going to change. You might not be a big shot, but you have a platform. Time to show them the real truth. You're in your fifties. You're still single, and losing your audience. They say you're not feminist. They say women being sexy is good actually. That isn't right, you already figured it out. They don't get it, and they're not listening to you - so who are they listening to, and what do they want? You'll get to the bottom of this. You figured your own life out, you'll figure out theirs. You've been reading, and watching videos. There's a lot of explanations out there. If you can nail down the right one, and show them all what they're doing wrong, they'll finally have to admit you were right!

I don't think anything is really publicly known about Ishida's personal life. Some people guessed that maybe some of his big shifts might've happened after getting a girlfriend, but it's all conjecture.

I have always said that Ishida's central principle of "you ladies are Womaning incorrectly, so allow me, an Enlightened Man, to show you how it's done" has never changed, it's just that his definition of "Womaning" has shifted over time. I would ask "so did he ever bring up Roe v Wade given that it was kinda loving important" but I already know he did not and never will.

has anyone itt ever talked about Carboniferous? it's by the people who did curvy which i never followed but the central premise here has me hooked, and imo it's getting really really good. science fiction adventure kind of thing. i really like the art and why the artists colour and when, but i can't really talk about it without spoiling it a bit. i think it's the comic i am most looking forward to weekly now - just two or three good sci fi premises firing at once and all being executed pretty well. i have no idea who the curvy people are so i hope they're not the gross kind of webcomic artists!
