real answer: i was pretty happy with a lot of my nodevember 2021 work

this was literally the first time i opened up the geometry node editor:

and it took me forever to figure out how to do this, and i was p happy with the end results, and would have been happy even if it wasnt entirely nodes:

and all of these were fun as heck to do:

They're probably reposts.

Fun fact: The lighting on all of these is a sun lamp + some object (a plane, or if I'm feeling fancy, a planet) to reflect it. I just move those around.

Thanks. Yeah that's true with the terminator. It's based on a funky volumetric atmosphere someone graciously let me use and that's just the result for whatever reason.

The third one was basically an experiment with what I could do with realistic space scenes. I built the scene to scale, with a gas giant (which is out of frame), and a habitable moon (what you see in the render) in the background either one or two light seconds away, I don't remember. So that scene is 300-600 million meters/Blender units wide, which turns out to be within bounds for what it can handle, and the moon is about that far from the camera. The ships are all hundreds of kilometers apart and the most distant one is about 1000 km from the camera. The camera to get that view has a focal length of 1000 mm, which is a lot, but it's not a crazy telescope or anything. It's the kind of thing wildlife photographers sometimes use. The scene looks like this:

That must be the widest viewport shot I've ever taken. I went through this insanity because I wanted to experimentally find what this scene would look like instead of just guessing. To adjust the lighting to look nice, I just moved these elements around in plausible ways.

It turns out that will render just fine, but bounce light from extremely distant sources takes absolute ages to converge, so I made a postcard-sized reference render with like a million samples and cheated for the final one. The moon doesn't interact with the ships in any visually meaningful way, so I rendered that separately and gave the dark side enough light to match the reflected light from the planet in the reference. Same with the ships. That's incidentally why the near side of the ships is a lot brighter than the near side of the moon - they're much closer to the planet the light is coming from.

Shameless repost, but pretty pleased with this guy. Mostly geonodes, although I did get the truck model from online somewhere. The geometry was too complex for freestyle on my computer so I ended up using an inverse hull method to get the black outlines instead

Goddamn man that is a Horny Render

I haven't been very active in the thread because all I'm doing is a bunch of animation polish and me stating and restating I Moved A Leg And It Was Cool isn't the most exciting thing in the world. This month I basically redid the animations on a part I thought would be simple as hell and very little work because I wasn't happy with the rhyhtymytmhm of it, so that took forever and it'll need repolishing but I got some fun bits done too. My first polish pass is about 3/5ths done now so hopefully I'll have a watchable animation that has decent movement in it by the end of the year.

I was hoping to have the project finished this year but adding sounds, figuring out wtf I'm going to do for a soundtrack, beautifying and detailing the environment and really dialling in those movements to look lively and have weight will probably push it to next year. It's a ton of work but animation always was gonna be :v:

In the meantime I stop myself from going insane by doing this

Here's the latest animation update following from the last. Honestly it's not great, I decided to redo most of the driver animations in this particular and as a result made a lot of work for myself. Hand, eye and facial expressions aren't implemented yet and the VFX for the fire is VERY placeholder and will be completely overhauled, camera motion is bad too because I just haven't had time to change it much from the old version. Regardless this is something I'll be able to dial in now the bulk of the work is out the way, just need to make sure the foliage placement makes sense because the first render I did you couldn't see anything due to the scale and placement of the grass :v:

can you edit the breading? can you say, split the sesame seed bun in thirds and put two all beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles and onions?

but if you want a free nle your going to be better off with davinci resolve than blender. blender is serviceable in that role but even die hard blender heads use davinci or premier for real video editing

love the software business model of basically having pro software free for amateurs and once you're using it above a certain level, it costs, but you'd be making money by then. its genius tbh

Shooting and Fucking
are the same thing!

Complete clueless noob over here:

I am working on a video where I want have a transition where we see the armies of Darkness on the march (played by free skeletons from YouTube) and then the camera zooms out and exits a laughing monster head in a manner similar to the laughing Bowser shape from Super Mario 64.

I've already modeled the head from clay and some teeth I bought off Ali Express and scanned it with Polycam but I've never used any 3D program and don't really know the workflow.

Is this feasible for someone who has never even touched Blender or should I stick to just morphing a 2D cutout of the beastie in After Effects?

honestly if you already know the after effects workflow that would be much faster than doing it in 3D. apparently it doesn't take too long to do a crude head rig in blender
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MccyVA3uhX0
but you already need to be pretty familiar with the blender interface to follow that tutorial with any degree of success, like hours deep into basic tutorials (interface, modeling, texturing, lighting, and rendering: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLjEaoINr3zgFX8ZsChQVQsuDSjEqdWMAD
rigging workflow: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=srpOeu9UUBU)

that being said, it's extremely rewarding and fun to know how to use blender, as anyone in this thread will attest. I'd say its absolutely worth learning, and if you plan to continue doing 3d scans of stuff you'll get a ton of utility out of blender
