I think you would loop the tube deep enough in the tank that the water line would be over the lip and then put your thumb over the ends when you pull the excess out and then let go with your thumbs but idk I just made that up

You can just put the tube and hose under the water in the aquarium, then kink the hose or put your thumb over the opening, and take the hose out. There are like a dozen other ways to start a siphon with no need for pumps or valves or anything, and you definitely don't need to put your mouth on it.

When I was ~4 years old I was visiting some family and my uncle happened to be doing a water change on their goldfish tank. I saw the hose draining out the window and ran over, shoved it into my mouth, and started chugging. That’s why I’m an SA poster now.

When cleaning the fish tank I would always siphon the water into a clean(-ish) white bucket instead of directly into a drain, since the smaller fish had a tendency to get a little too close and, no doubt to their astonishment, get schlorped up through the tube. It wasn't unusual to need to rescue one or two fish from the bucket before dumping it.
