An Act of Murder done. Agree that it's the weak link, though that really comes down to my inexperience with text adventures. I had to reload a lot of times to make sure I eliminated every possible suspect, and for instance "search" has different effects than "examine" which tripped me up. Not bad though.

Because it never leaves its bedroom, no one has ever seen this poster's real face.
|
might be fun to do these with the kids, how appropriate would any of these be?
hm
I wouldn't recommend Photopia because it deals with themes that would probably be pretty distressing for a child (although, amusingly, part of it is about playing games with a kid),
and An Act of Murder is pretty dry
Gun Mute, as Arrhythmia said, is pretty much T for teen, I guess as long as you don't >look at juanita
I can't remember anything untoward in Superluminal Vagrant Twin, but I also wasn't really thinking about it in terms of being child appropriate
(and I have kind of a bad sense for that anyway because my parents let me watch Terminator 2, Predator, and Robocop when I was like 6)
if I was picking a text adventure specifically for a parent to play with kids, I think I would have picked The Impossible Bottle, which is cute and very imaginative and very child-friendly, but, no game club trophy

i'm too retarded for act of murder
I struggled with it at first, but basically you want to (general hint, not too spoilery but spoilering just in case) establish whether each of the suspects has the means, opportunity, and motive. Once I realized that that was the goal, things fell into place for me on how to proceed.
Anyway,
Cool mix of games. Really enjoyed Superluminal Vagrant Twin. Got 48 planets but I know there are more out there so I'll see if I can find any others.

Gun Mute was short and simple in a very good way, I'll go back for the last three points later
Photopia wasn't really a game but the "rails" themselves have a very satisfying narrative explanation once it all comes together
Working on Vagrant Twin now and this doesn't *need* to be a text adventure but the parser adds some charm I think. Also it has fishing.

Finished Vagrant and I assume I missed some planets but not sure where to go looking for them. Didn't really care for how the "main" quest line dumps the money you need on you in one big lump, I'd have preferred if there were different combinations of things to do to scrape the 5 million together.

Instead there's multiple ways to do the main quest, I don't think you even need to find Prax

Yeah there's multiple ways to get to Haven. Even when you find Prax, the amalg who has his tube wants 100k for him normally, but if you have the emblem or come back after buying it, he just hands him over.
I was fine with not having to do $5 million in odd jobs, the trading game gets unwieldly after a while with ~50 locations as it is, adding more locations would make that part even worse and adding more valuable trades would just gate the ending behind finding those particular planets.
Although I never did sell the gem, I should see what that's worth.

I ended up Grafting enough amalg parts to myself (razortail, bronze wings, roboclaw, laser eye and nuclear heart) to make the amalg respect me and Viscera told me where to get coordinates to jump to Haven. When I found Prax the amalg just handed him over for free lol.

pre:> open closet
You find a bunch of old clutter left behind by Chet's parents, first from when
they used this as the spare room, then from when it was the nursery for Chet
himself. There's a lot of history in this pile, and also probably a lot of gross
birth fluids or whatever it is that happens.
> examine clutter
You give a cursory, half-hearted browse of the cultural rubble. This room must've
also been the man cave before Chet showed up. Man, if walls could talk...
Of the debris, the two items that catch your eye are a battered Playstation 3
and a clothing catalog.
> examine playstation 3
It appears to be late model. You don't know what firmware it's on, but you're
pretty sure it doesn't have the PS2 backwards compatibility stuff.
> take playstation 3
Taken.
> take playstation 3 games
I don't know what "playstation 3 games" is.
> examine catalog
A catalog for one of the many kids clothing stores that used to litter stripmalls
from coast to coast. "BACK 2 SKOOL!" is printed on the front in enthusiastic
Comic Sans, above a fellow twelve year old dressed in a baggy school uniform
and shades giving the least enthusiastic thumbs up ever.
There but for the grace of God, huh?
> take catalog
Taken.
> place playstation 3 on windowsill
You carefully place the games console on the windowsill, making sure it doesn't
fall off into the yard below. That'd be hard to explain to Chet's parents.
> place catalog on windowsill.
You slip the catalog half-under the PS3 to keep it from blowing away in the
evening breeze.
> south
Bleary-eyed, you take a few steps into the kitchen to grab a quick lemonade
before bed.
Behind you, you suddenly hear a frenzy of activity from the room you just left.
It lasts all of a second, with the slam of a window acting as the dot on an
exclamation point of noise.
> north
You step back into the bedroom, and witness a preculiar sight. The catalog has
vanished completely, and the Playstation 3 has been hooked up to a period-
appropriate CRT television (that wasn't there before) running Bonk's Adventure in
a version of MAME that's older than you are. As the attract mode loops silently
and endlessly, you get the feeling that you've appeased some mysterious entity,
and that it's spared your life in return.
The rest of the night is uneventful. You fall asleep shortly thereafter and your
parents pick you up in the morning. As the neighborhood rushes by your passenger-
seat window, you reflect on the previous night and wonder - did kids REALLY grow
up playing Bonk's Adventure? Because wow, that game kinda blows.
