How much money could it cost to have a movie file in your servers? How much streaming residuals were they paying out to Cole Sprouse?

That article is pure speculation on the reason why they removed the movies. For all we know, HBO is just playing games by having movies disappear, just so they can come back in a few months and be "Just Added" making it look like new content. They could also be trying to sell it to other streaming services to license for a few months or something. Who the gently caress knows.

Award for most "why do I keep watching this horrifying thing" goes to Black Bird. It's good, I think? True Detective is a fun genre thriller by comparison.

Sounds like they should just shut down the merged company and call it a day

So when HBO Max inevitably gets killed, are they going to bring back HBO GO or a similar service? Or will this new service still let people watch HBO content?

HBO Max was somehow distinct from HBO; sounds like that won’t be the case anymore. Discovery is like 100% trash-tier reality shows which are infinitely cheaper to produce than real shows. I’m guessing there will still be scripted HBO shows (for now) unless they’re just entirely giving up and doubling-down on garbage.

I wonder if the other hubs from max will carry over too, ghibly, adult swim, tcm, sesame workshop, all that. 90% of what I watch on max isn't "hbo" content.

Yes they are distinct, and apparently you CAN just sub to HBO and stream it even though it's the same price as HBO Max.

This is a clusterfuck. HBO, just tell me what I'll need to do so I can watch Righteous Gemstones S3 when it drops.

Preserve what you can while you can. If the endgame from companies wasn't clear when poo poo started years ago, it's crystal now: anything's expendable and can be deleted, how many view it/how often it's viewed doesn't matter in terms of "but this isn't, surely", and releases from within 13 months ago can and will be in the same position as lost-to-time releases from 85 years ago. To ignore or deny it, at this obvious a state of expressing it as this week has been, is to endorse it

I mean at this point it’s less like piracy and more like media preservation, which is absolutely pathetic.

In a perfect world the rise of streaming services should have been a golden age for studios making their entire libraries available. Instead we’re nearing a return to the pre-VHS days unless you have a massive physical media library of your own.

And even that isn’t a guarantee anymore, given how many DVDs and even Blu-rays I have that developed some form of disc rot thanks to the occasional batches of discs with substandard manufacturing.
