Regarding china outcompeting I read this interesting story. Sorry if it was in this thread I saw it: https://www.npr.org/2022/08/03/1114964240/new-battery-technology-china-vanadium

This is interesting because the tone of the article is HOW COULD THIS HAPPEN HOW IS IT POSSIBLE THE AMERICAN PEOPLE PAID FOR IT AND THEN CHINA GOT IT? But it's explained in very clear terms how it happened. No american investors were willing to pay to bring it to market so the government let the (american) owner get funding from china which came with a lot of requirements about how the batteries were to be manufactured and how the IP was to be disposed of.

Capitalist economies can't remain transcendent because the economy being transcendent is not a goal of the people running the economy.

Saudi Arabia is state capitalist

Yeah. I think during Marx's time the concept of a "sovereign wealth fund" was just an idea whose only parallel could be drawn to royal trade companies. At this point any country that monopolizes a key industry like oil, and financializes all of its proceeds, is engaging in state capitalism. I think you can argue over how mixed these economies are, but a sovereign wealth fund ought to be enough on its own to fit a literal definition.

So i read about a couple detail of Pelosi visit in Taiwan
*The TSMC founder, Zhang Zhongmou, was invited to show up in the morning to have a private talk w Pelosi. He didn't show up and only up for the crowded ceremony at noon w his wife and didn't let Pelosi had a chance to talk to him
* There was supposed to be a press release in the afternoon, supposedly with the Tainsnmen dissidents and HK 19 dissidents but the press was cancelled. This is Pelosi's bread and butter, anti CCP and pro Tiananmen dissidents. Why was it cancelled?
* Pelosi didn't know about Yoon not meeting him until afternoon, so she stayed longer and took more photos in the airport.
* In the morning press, the Taiwanese government press agency, Central Press asked her, "So do you foresee that your visit will bring up even more secondary, high, senior official U.S. from – to visit Taiwan in the future", she said "certainly hope so."

I am sure the reporter was given this question by DPP, because he said it as much himself. That's basically more salami slicing and kinda promises a higher official (US president) visiting Taiwan. Why would you ask that question after PLA has already announced the military operation? I have to say the DPP and Tsai Eng wen are loving idiots. So this question and Pelosi's other antics must had freaked Biden out. Thats why he called in and cancel the afternoon press.

Also he must have asked Yoon to give Pelosi the cold shoulder. This is the only explanation of why a right wing SK president didn't meet Pelosi.

That's an insane question for the simple reason that saying "yes" would have been actually illegal. A real life "simple, sometimes naive" moment for us here in the united states. Love to see it.

I don't have number on hand, but my understanding is Japan has never tied the interest of state and the interest of major Japanese corporations together, unlike Korea and China.

Look at the yen inflation of the early 80s. That basically sacrificed the Japanese manufacturing and export industries in favor of the real estate and banking industries. Companies like Honda and Sony, moved their core profit center out of Japan a long time ago. They became true international corps and don't have deep roots in Japan.

Also another thing, Japanese infrastructures companies, like HSR, got their start early but the state didn't act as a salesman to push their products oversea. There is almost no Japanese HSR outside of Japan. Taiwanese HSR uses Japanese tech partially only because Lee Teng-hui forced it on the national rail company. The global HSR industry and the nuclear power industrial are also two examples of very capital intensive industries, you need the state to help you sell the product and maybe even take care of financing.

there's a documentary that talks about the "window guidance system" in the context of finance. there's also the zaibatsus that are pretty similar to chaebol.

my understanding is they were a lot more planned and the 80s crash was due to outside pressure to liberalize.

it's the foreclosing of future possibilities which creates the culture of living in the "now," which being the best world possible, must champion the new star wars and wholesome doggos.

but that was an illusion

so a new force needed to be created from the outside responsible for this community's thwarted expectations and which made its sense of fulfillment impossible
