Katamari Democracy posted:Some even call it cheating It's interesting how for how similar the games are how different some of these sort of "meta" bits are, like how playing super conservative is considered cheating with PIU whereas arcades will have "do not put baby powder on the DDR pads" signs up because talcing up the pads for "stamina play" (shuffling around, lifting your legs as little as possible) is such a common high level practice, or how PIU doesn't allow bar use for competitions but every high level DDR player I've seen is adhered to the bar the whole time

The biomechanics of PIU are just more natural IMO and don’t lend themselves to adhering to a bar I think.

But the bars are legal in both piu and ddr due to safety concerns. Used to do a lot of tournaments and can say people who complain about the bar can be shot into the sun.

I didn’t know even a single person cared about bar vs. no bar in 2022. Part of me wants to build a bar for my home setup because the upper tier of 16s is just brutal without a bar. I still haven’t passed a 17 yet just due to lack of stamina. But playing no bar is way better exercise, so it’s a decent trade off.

Freestyling is great exersize AND it looks cool if you perform comfortably. H.O.T is a prime example. No pun intended. Edit- Just also wanted to go a little further but starting out a lot of new players do not necessarily use the bar unless they feel uncomfortable with the layout. DDR is no exception, but it really depends on player preference and skill. I have seen players perform very well without using the bar, but to me using it is more comfortable, and I have met others who like to laugh and taunt at people who use them. I do not really talk to those people and thankfully they are very few of them. But as you climb into the much harder difficulties and when the game throws very rapid fire stairs and twists then its easy to get caught up and trip. That's why the bar is there as a safety precaution and to prevent players from falling and breaking their necks or hurting other players around them. Dance around is such a busted piece of trash, why does my R1 need two of them! I got my first 8 in iidx a couple weeks ago. After slamming my head against more of them I've switched to playing lower randoms to get used to the bullshit chords that start appearing now.

Are these PC-only simfiles that are meant to be played on a keyboard, or are there actually legit PIU tracks that have you do two directions + center simultaneously? I was never good enough at DDR to get into ITG but I remember hearing that game also had some 3- or 4-at-once steps as well. Were you supposed to use your hands, or kind of smash your feet down at a weird angle, or what?

The .ssc files used in the software I use is also connected with official user custom steps and the official stepcharts from the arcades. You can legit make your own feet / hand pads at home which is also what I use. As for your second question; those steps use heel to toe. One foot can hit two steps as long as the foot is pointing in the direction of the notation from the mindset of heel to toe. Double postin' more Pump it Up stuff. This past weekend I finally got through my thick skull on managing certain step patterns that and also remembering to speed up past X4 on certain charts so I can manage to read closeup steps better in the future. Everybody should know this song. But I was stuck on learning how to read this for weeks without going past X4 and once I did and learned the pattern it made life so much easier (And goofy because you have to do a lot of twists and heel stepping to get right) Conga S21 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5NByWUjM5pw This next song is more stamina and twist focused. And it does not give up. Given the name and how big of a reputation it has I am sure you can understand why: Bee S22 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4hf1fHJUJtQ And finally, every cabnet version of Pump it Up has one song that is cruel and unusual. In the later stages on S26 watching it looks borderline impossible, and hell even Doubles very few people in the world can actually stage pass the song. But yesterday was a big milestone for me being able to finally read and beat a song (Granted at S23 but still) 1949 S23 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1l0uDXAr9-g So yeah, pretty big week for me! Also leveled up again!

As someone who just started messing around with the IIDX cabs at Round1 a few weeks ago I hope the UI is better because I extremely do not understand the point of the channels and whatnot on Cast Hour is. I love that Konami’s “English available!” basically comes down to translating like 4 absolutely mission critical menu items to English and leaving everything else Japanese.

is the difference just the 120hz screen? R1 got one here as well but I’ve just been using the regular cabs since I’m still really new to the game and there’s been a line for the valk

hardware wise the screen size is bigger (43 inch vs 32 for regular cabs), 120hz and I think the stock spring/switch changed (100g switches, 20g springs?). the regular cabs just have access to light start, which means you can't do any of the song unlock events so there's a solid chunk of songs from those events you just don't have access to. when you're scrolling the song list and you see a song with a lock icon, that's a song that's gated behind one of those events. with the valk cab, standard and blaster start are enabled so not only can we finally unlock those songs, we also get ex track, ARS, and even premium time. the only thing we don't have is valkyrie generator which is the in-game gacha for unlocking cosmetics like navigators, bgm, touch screen backgrounds, etc.

The new buttons are really satisfying to hit, also the new knobs use ball bearings which feels nicer and will make them last longer. Valk cabs also allow for use of premium time which is great for grinding PUCs/grade raises, and the aforementioned standard/blaster starts which are now a necessity for unlocks.

I'm still working on getting back into boss songs and I managed a 911k on MAX 300 a few months ago, which feels pretty great. Even when I was much younger and that song was brand-new I would usually run out of gas not long after the freeze. Nowadays it's not an issue for me. I'd like to de-rust IIDX again. At least this time coming back, I can still reliably clear all the 9's and a few of the easy 10's. I also need to plan a Round 1 trip so I can transfer my old Bistrover data before I lose it. No worries, it's just an overly-involved song unlock mechanism. It changes completely with each game, but it's almost always "just keep pushing buttons to get it over with" (no right or wrong way to do it.) Lately, new IIDX releases come with about half of their songs unlocked and ready to play, with another chunk needing to be unlocked, and the rest trickle in over time via OTA updates.

Installing the don mods - which is swapping out the foam inserts for something more stiff - wasn't too bad and produced a noticeable improvement. The ka mods are a little finickier. I did them a couple times (increasing the amount of extra material the second time), and I'm pretty sure there was a difference, but it wasn't the highly noticeable thing that the plates were.
