I watched Predator 2 a couple years ago and being older from when I first watched it, I thought there was some interesting commentary on vigilante worship and American crime (mainly both are bad and the bad rear end police don't do much to help) but I might of been thinking too hard.

AVP isn't a BAD movie per se, its just a movie of wasted potential given other AVP media out there. I am not sure it should be an action oriented movie but that's just my opinion. Though the facehugeger scene in the movie is properly creepy.

It's too bad Predators didn't work cause it had a loving killer row of actors to make it work you know?

The original alien vs predator game on the PC was extremely accurate, in that, if you played as the marine, you spent the whole game expecting to die in the next 5 seconds.
It was very stressful.

I will give AVP2 credit for two things (which I will spoiler on the off chance that anyone wants to watch it, although I urge you not to!)
  • Moving away from only successfully targeting adults did succeed in shocking and unsettling me in a way that had some lasting power.
  • In the end the military makes the sensible decision of just nuking the place from a plane, making them the smartest authorities I've ever seen in any of these films, and them lying to the people on the ground about it keeps them assholes like they should be. I do think they should have gone hard and just had the special forces kill the ones who managed to escape, but whatever.

Again, not a good film, do yourself a favor and don't watch it.

AvP bugs me because it’s PG-13, and the Predators (besides the Celtic predator of course!!!) look too bulky and weird. And they have HORRIBLE faces.

The story isn’t terrible but I wish it wasn’t set on earth.

It’s better than AvP-R at least. I like Predators tho.

AvP-R sucks rear end because it’s way too edgy in a stupid way. Those directors spent months talking about how hardcore it was because the movie kills kids and blows up pregnant women.

loving annoying.

The underlying premise (Aliens and Predators fight in a small town) could have been way more interestingly implemented as a miniseries or downright TV season, Stranger Things before Stranger Things.

Yeah, the script felt really stitched together. It felt a bit like at one point it was intended for Munn's character to have a more prominent role with the whole journalism angle, but then at some point Generic McSoldierman was shoved in there as the default lead instead.

Prey (2006) was one of the last really good first person shooters that didn't lean so hard into multiplayer, loot crates and other such nonsense. You were a Native American guy with a lighter and your girlfriend gets kidnapped by a UFO and you go gently caress them up. It had an extreme Cronenburg aesthetic to it.

As a child I always wondered how companies picked a serial number/ID number/registration key/license plate scheme/etc format that would be large enough to encompass all possible future user expansion. What's the magic number? 10x more than you expect to ever sell? 100?

Its hilarious that the answer in at least one circumstance is "they just didn't".

Potentially they could! It's been done with games from around that era- when Dark Souls (2011) for example switched over to using Steamworks for its multiplayer, it also ditched Games for Windows Live as its secondary required login service. So if you bought Dark Souls on PC it USED to have a key, but now no longer does and it's null and void.

Sadly the problem with BOTH the examples of Prey and Wolf 2009 is they've been caught in publisher trademark copyright blaargghh hell and we will likely never see them retouched for that reason.

Yeah I honestly hadn't even heard about Wolfenstein keys running out because the wacky rights issues seemed much more critical. Though now I guess weirdly enough most of that may or may not get untangled thanks to Microsoft just owning everything?

Yeah, I believe Prey was 2K Games and Wolfenstein was Activision. Both IPs are now owned by Bethesda/Microsoft, but not necessarily those games specifically, so theoretically no one has the legal right to release them again, unless the companies come to an agreement.

Speaking of, when I rewatched it a while back it struck me just how prevalent the fear of crime was in the (white) cultural US psyche at the time. So many movies around that time had the premise that some time soon the US would become a wild wasteland of unrestricted gang warfare.

Well,
Wolfenstein: The New Order
Wolfenstein: The New Colossus
Wolfenstein: Youngblood

Are all still available and are primarily story based about BJ and I think they are all fantastic and brilliant examples of modern FPS reinvention of old classic ones. (Though when it comes to the last two, especially Youngblood, I am way more of a fan than a lot of posters) but I got so captivated by the story in New Order that I just had to see how it kept going. I am eagerly awaiting whatever the next one is!

I never got past the demo, where if you played as a Marine you were absolutely guaranteed to die in the first five seconds because they hosed up the level design so badly that you couldn't get out of the starting corridor without being killed by the environment. I gave it a couple of tries to see if I was missing something, then uninstalled it without ever seeing an alien or a Predator.

You should track down Wolfenstein 2009, it's a really solid, if uncomplicated game.

I enjoyed the game, but it did feel like they had multiple different groups design it and to avoid continuity issues with what weapons were or were not available, they just defaulted to take away everything.

Yeah there was that 20 year stretch from the mid 70s to the mid 90s where there were a lot of movies about either how crime ridden cities were or how in the future lawless gangs were going to take over.

One of my favorite stupid 90s takes on the gang infested future of America was from the movie version of Double Dragon (which I liked as a kid); the police of Los Angeles made a deal with the gangs where the gangs give up all their guns and the police stop enforcing any kind of law at night. You needed it to set up the (very very bad) premise of the Double Dragon games where nobody shoots anyone ever but even as a kid come on.
