Isn't Judicial Watch a front organization for Larry Klayman? That would be their interest in this? They've acted as a conservation culture war front organization in the past.

The simple answer is that conservative entities also want to know what's in the warrant, either to use it to attack Trump or to attack the search.

Technically Larry Klayman doesn't work there anymore after he was forced out, but they are definitely still a conservative watchdog group and shouldn't be trusted to do anything for the right reasons.

Lots more detail about scheduling, planning, coordination, even the burden of proof to get the judge to sign the warrant. They ultimately did everything correctly but people are just complaining because someone had a chance to show up and start protesting. It takes a long time to go through a place of that size. It would have been much, much worse if Trump was on the premises. While there wasn't a group of private militia standing ready on the front lawn, he would have tried to get them there within 2hr to escalate the situation to a standoff. fwiw, in addition to "deep state", "raid!", it looks like there's going to be some reaching back to claims of "there was no whistleblower".

I don’t believe that for a second. There is absolutely no way the FBI didn’t expect this to receive exactly the response it got. It was a literal historical event involving an inflammatory GOP hero. Any work they did to minimize the media profile would have been to assure themselves they weren’t making a spectacle out of it, not the GOP.

If (assuming this source is credible and correct which is not established at all) the people who made the decision truly thought this was going to be a low-key non-political thing then they are too stupid to continue working at their jobs or to be trusted with any meaningful decisions.

The people who made this decision don’t give a gently caress about how it looks. I don’t think that would enter into Garland’s decision to okay this or not. Look at his earlier comments re Jan 6. “We intend to hold everyone, anyone who was criminally responsible for the events surrounding Jan. 6, for any attempt to interfere with the lawful transfer of power from one administration to another, accountable. That’s what we do. We don’t pay any attention to other issues with respect to that.” The GOP and nutters can scream all they want. Political pressure isn’t going to change the direction of the investigations by the DOJ here.

Garland understandably doesn't want this to look like his personal baby, or motivated by any individual and especially political appointees in the agency, sure. But his approach has been to shut up and do his job rather than grandstanding about it. I guess from a certain right-wing tabloid perspective that would qualify as "distancing himself" but that's just since showing off how you're getting the bad guys is how they think police/prosecutors should work.

It's hard to believe even Trump is dumb enough to think he can sell state secrets without getting caught. They were probably worried about how Trump likes to brag to everyone. You can imagine him down in Mar-a-lago showing every guest all the cool new weapons systems he was briefed on, that he no doubt tells everyone he built personally. All it would take is a Chinese asset to walk in the door and the balance of power in geopolitics changes in a very real way. -Blackadder- fucked around with this message at 21:14 on Aug 11, 2022 |
