This is all second hand from 10+ years ago when I remember someone posting the pics somewhere. I don't even know where it came from but he was a huge Duke Nukem fan was got extremely defensive over DNF in the thread when people started making GBS threads all over it. Duke Nukem Forever - Post about people's posting = Probation I think the images are somewhere in that thread, I sure as hell don't remember Axe in any other context then Duke Nukem weirdness and think that anything that came out would 100% be there at least. For example the mermaid Shelley stuff happened because a goon wanted to gather people to make fun of her mermaid cosplay, but people did not endear to it and the mods challenged the goon to post a picture where they pose with a massive blunt and a sign or face a ban. Other goons posted photos of themselves in that vein because it was fun. Shelley traced the sudden spike of traffic her site received to the forums and did a photo of herself, securing the goon's ban

How they've worked every time I've seen one is that the mod, new or otherwise, says "hey would this be a funny mod challenge?" behind the scenes and then either it happens or doesn't based on feedback. That's not a requirement or anything, mods can do will just do them especially in the smaller forums where there isn't a big mod team, but I'd venture that more often than not they're something that at a minimum the mod wanting to do a challenge does a temp check to make sure that they're not either doing something horribly unfunny or mean or something.

I remember an LP mod challenge where the person being challenged was asleep and it was a challenge where someone else could do the challenge and decide the fate of the poster. So someone did it within half an hour, the person woke up and went "wtf" and the goon who won the challenge went "Now you have to be my cocommentator" Don't think that actually went anywhere after that though. I think that ended mod challenges in LP until the great one, GaminGo, graced the subforum with his presence.
