If the SK president, this Yoon guy is walking so close to Samsung I get a good feeling S.Korea is not going to join the Biden Chip4 alliance (or only join in name only), because Samsung has huge semiconductor investment in China.

I don't know if I said this before, Biden admin declaring a huge tech war in the semiconductor industry against China IMO is unwise decision. Why am I saying that, because if you ignore all the nanometer wavelength/ASML/etc technical detail and look at it on a longer scope, the Americans are just not very good at hardware manufacturing historically. It's a very boring and thankless job. Nobody in the US likes to be in that business or aspired to become a semiconductor engineer growing up, who has to be on call 24 hours.

Investing in a war you are not better at than the Chinese or East Asians in general is just strategically spending the resource in the wrong direction. They could have spent small portion on it to ensure Intel's future and spend the rest of the 40 billions in other industries that Americans are better at the Chinese. Like AI software, medical and bio technology, propaganda, etc.

Like this idiot wrote that passage down, thought about it, and he and his editors thought yep, titanic, that's the example we want to use.

titantic is a disaster action movie with romantic subplot/framing story

it is one of the whitest posts I've ever seen. it assumes american movies are 'normal' and other countries movies are 'foreign films' - deviations. lol. their own cinema is a perversion of taste

its not even accurate in regards to describing american movies look at our charts and look at the chinese charts and ours are way more dominated by bombastic action bullshit that implicitly validates the righteousness of the ruling culture

the dude has to jump back three decades to think of a big movie that doesnt fit that mold because thats how long its been since weve had one but the chinese box office has movies like that every year i mean poo poo we were just talking about one like five pages ago

there was a weird blip where american media was scared of japan's insane real estate growth and their huge holding of US debt and so a bunch of movies have Japan as the badguy. Diehard, Gung Ho, Bladerunner etc make sense in this lens - japanese business will take over our society. Of course you also get ninja this, karate that, samurai and anime all as cultural imports as well.

In bladerunner 2049 I remember the production designer or someone saying in an interview "we want the future not just represent japanese culture but instead lots of foreign cultures overlapping, give more representation, less fascination with japan" and I was like drat that's a huge misreading of what japanese culture represented in the original. America lost an economic war with japanese business.

do you have some easily digestible links or articles about how his claims are false? I’m thinking of effortposting to my lib brained brother who has lived in Japan since 2006 and thought my criticism of the xinjiang reporting was “a weird take”. I was going to probably search this thread and pull things but you seem to have a knack of pulling stuff .

I should read digitally more and underline but I like a vanity bookshelf I admit. maybe one day I can have a 25k Stalin library.

I watched the first half of this cause goons keep posting it but is there like, a single japanese person involved in making this? lol

it's all some german guy living in japan. it's also painfully boring like reading a wikipedia. I can just read a book about it

edit: I mean it's insane to me to use clips of a german guy living in japan as the expert of what was going on in the economy at that point and not like, some other opinions alongside it, people working in the government or finance or anything except some expat with a vlog

edit: oh it's his book, "princes of the yen" lol

the whole movie has like the same weird bias that the white narrative is the standard one and interviewing japanese experts / people who worked in the government or finance or whatever, would somehow be a deviation from the truth.

like the titanic movie guy thinking that hollywood films from his formative years were 'normal' movies

I can understand Werner wrote the book but if you're making this kind of documentary why would you use a single source?

the quantitative estimates are based on nothing and the framing as genocide or settler colonialism is historically illiterate but there are in fact lots of non-han people from xinjiang who are or were incarcerated on flimsy or irrelevant evidence and subjected to coerced participation in education programs that feature rote loyalty expression and corporal discipline (with all the sorts of local, unsanctioned abuses by bad cops that large scale ethnically-targeted policing and punishment has), which is something that is bad even if the cia is making up salacious details and pushing it in the media everywhere for geopolitical purposes

my insane posts about how the uighurs are settler/colonizers for the Qing as part of a Qing plan to prop up islam against buddhist ethnic Mongols is still a good historical framework to understand that

1. What we call Xinjiang is better understood as 2 distinct regions, at least from a historical perspective, that now are under one Autonomous Region (province)
2. There was increasing terrorist activity which has now been stopped
2. Westerners have made up a backstory and projected their own islamophobia completely ignoring Hui people and the terrorist/seperatist activity and the history.
3. The camps are a policy of collective punishment which probably wouldn't be applied to any Han subgroup, but otherwise a lot of the lack of freedom of people in Xinjiang is exactly shared all over china. It's normal to speak mandarin at school and do bullshit patriotic stuff - like any nation.

The presentation of "satellite imagery" and "leaked papers" as a major source of discovery in Xinjiang makes it seem like North Korea - a place where we can't get eyes on the ground (actually this is kinda a false framing of North Korea as well). Too foreign - inhuman.

The implication is its a very closed off, remote, foreign place. It's a psychological tool, to frame it as if the entire province is an open air prison, a closely guarded warzone. A big Gaza Strip (except we like Israel).

it's actually a huge tourist destination and you can just go there and drive around, like say, Oklahoma (OK is not a tourist destination but you know what I mean). It's remote, sure, but not isolated.
